Tandem Nursing Question
Kind of an odd. So I'm still nursing my 18 month old and now my almost 3 week old. My question is about germs. After I nurse my toddler should I be washing off before nursing my newborn? Normally I wouldn't even think about it but my toddler is around preschool kids all day (we own a preschool) and I'm paranoid about him having germs or illness that could be passed to the newborn. The toddler nurses to nap and then within 20 minutes or so the newborn wants to nurse as well. So a little time between but not much.
What do you think? Could a cold or other germs be passed that way?
Germs can most certainly be passed that way. Germs can be passed all sorts of ways. I think if Archer is going to catch something from Odin, he's going to catch it and there's no amount of boob washing that's going to prevent it. I mean, you run a preschool! Give yourself a break and don't add one more little thing you have to do every day.
What Erin said. If Archer is going to catch something it's going to happen weather you wash the boobs or not.
How is tandem nursing going? Any challenges so far?
You ladies are probably so right. I tried washing them before posting & found it didn't feel so good for a while after anyway.
So far its going good Jackie. Archer is so little so I've get to attempt nursing both at the same time. Plus Odin is still a little territorial. Now he tells the baby "no more" and signs all done  I just remind myself they will be BFF some day soon. How is the nursing while preg going for you guys? Are you going to keep going till Aiden self weans?
It's really hurting at initial latch right now, but gets better quickly once he settles down. I can tell that my supply isn't all that much because he wants both boobs twice every single time. Poor little man doesn't understand. I'm going to let him keep BFing as long as he wants. The pain isn't as bad as when he was a newborn and we were learning how to get a good latch.
I can totally see Aiden one day telling this LO that s/he is "all done" too.
I'm sitting here NAK thinking how the heck would a newborn fit into this equation! No way I could nurse a newborn at the same time as this fiend. Just more proof that you're super mom, Joy. I'm so glad tandem nursing is going well. Is Odin nursing more frequently because he sees Archer nursing or is it about the same?
WTG on BFing through pregnancy, Jackie. Another feat I'm scared to tackle. I have no doubt T will still be nursing by the time number #2 is in the works. I'll just have to remind myself, as you're doing, that its not as bad as newborn nursing and we got through that!
Speaking of newborn nursing ... Joy, how does nursing Archer now to nursing Odin as a newborn? Do you feel that nursing through your pregnancy kept your nipples "primed" so to speak?
I'm glad its still going good Jackie. I had he inital latch pain on and off during pregnancy as well. I think it was better during the 2nd trimester so hopefully that is true for you too. Yeah, Odin would nurse longer as well when the supply went down but then toward the end just would be happy to nurse for a shorter period.
Erin, you will be part of the nursing and preg. club for sure I bet. So nursing Archer has been very pain free compared to the first few weeks of nursing my other boys. I had like a day where there was a little discomfort on the right side when he would latch (he was only 2 days old) but I'm positive it was due to his tongue tie and hasn't been back since he was clipped. My nips must be solid and primmed or something cause not even a little hint of the usual newborn nipple adjustment. Now Odin is the one that I find has an uncomfortable latch all of a sudden but I think it has to do with how his front teeth hit my nips and all the teething going on.
Also the other thing that is different is the lack of over full or extra engorment going on that I usually have happen during the first 2 weeks. I've had a few times I've felt full when there is a length of time between feeds but nothing like how its been in the past. Seems like the milk has regulated really well even though there is loads of it. Also I'm not leaking a ton like I usually do in the beginning. And Archer goes about every 3 hours between feeds most of the time where both other boys wanted to nurse every 1-1.5 hours on the dot. Maybe the more like this time has something to do with it.
Interesting and good info Joy! Glad to hear it's going better this time around. :)
