Default $500 reward for turning in your neighbors

New York offers $500 reward for reporting illegal gun owners | Fox News

NY State is offering a $500 reward for turning in gun violations. Is this a good or bad idea?

Turning in people doing illegal activities? Why is that bad again?

Oh is it the reward?...good incentive.

Sounds like a huge waste of tax money. How would the neighbor know if they are illegal or not? So what if everyone starts calling the hotline on the chance they might get $500, how many man hours are the police going to have to spend to follow up on all these tips that are probably bogus anyway?

It is turning neighbour against neighbour. It is not the people's job to enforce a law that the majority of the people do not support. This has become a HUGE issue in the area of NY that I grew up. It is very rural and not like the rest of NY. Two people that I know personally have already been arrested by NY's new gun laws. One guy that I knew growing up (former military) had some ammo in his car (no gun, just ammo). He did not know he was not allowed to do this. He has been sentenced to more years in prison than if he had either raped someone or murdered them. The situation has spiralled out of control and the answer is not to get neighbour to turn against neighbour.

I will say though that at least in that part of NY, the people have banded together. Huge FB campaigns to raise the money for excellent lawyers and defences.

They don't get the reward unless an arrest is made.

Sorry your friend got arrested but he needs to know the law. If this is such big news that the community is rallying with facebook pages...shouldn't he have known this?

Ya but the man hours spent to check it out will cost taxpayer dollars whether an arrest is made or not.

What would the motivation be to call on people if you weren't at least somewhat certain they were holding guns illegally?

Then they could have always done that. If they aren't possessing guns illegally then the caller gets nothing. Just like it used to be.

They did not start to rally around him until after he was arrested.
