Sure, the little jerk deserves some sort of consequence but do you think being arrested was over the top?
Well, I am completely 100% against all "hate crime" legislation, so of course I think that it is ridiculous. If his actions were arrest worthy (as assault), arrest him.
He has a history of threatening and harassing this girl. If they think he broke the law, arrest him and try him and see how it washes out. Clearly nothing else is getting through to this kid.
Even without hate crime legislation, this kid assaulted the girl. Unfortunately, in cases of things like Oppositional Defiant Disorder, or a kid who's a sociopath, I'm not sure it matters. The kid may just be fated for a life in the justice system. However they want to do it is fine, but this girl needs some sort of protection from verbal or physical assault.
Is 12 too young for a good old fashioned asswhippin'?
Just kidding. Sort of.
He assaulted her, yes he deserved to be arrested.
It is assault and should be treated as such. I feel he deserves to be arrested. Maybe he will learn from it.
If the SRO officer believed he should be arrested, then he deserved to be arrested. BTW, I think he was being a little more then just a jerk. To me a jerk is someone who takes your parking space or doesn't hold the elevator, not someone who mocks a Muslim child and tries to disrobe her.
Melissa, I always think it is interesting when people are 100% against hate crime legislation. Can you explain? I think in an equal society, it wouldnt be necessary and I would be against it too as maybe it kind of assumes that certain people are victims by default. But this aint an equal society. Discuss. lol
In a nutshell? I don't think that it works. In fact, I think that it harms more than it helps.
I will try to find a thread where I explain how I feel about it in detail, I know we have done it here before.....I don't know that I have that one in me again, for sure I don't tonight.
