Is ad offensive to those suffering depression?

I just have a question: What happened to the Big Mac?

I don't find the ads particularly offensive, just kinda off the mark and dumb. I guess there's a whole line of new McDonald's ads like this one. Scroll down in the article to the comments.

Duh. I get it now. She feels bad because she actually ate a Big Mac. I thought like McD's stopped making the Big Mac and 300 million people got all depressed about it.

See, it reminded me of those "first world problems" memes and didn't get the relationship to depression. However, I am not a sufferer of depression so thought I might be missing something.

I didn't laugh loudly at it but I don't think it's awful.

I actually love it as a contrast to the usual McDonald's advertising. I can see why the company was unhappy wiith it, forget the idea of offending people, but all their ads are sunny and bright and pretend that eating McDonald's will make everybody feel happy and wonderful. I like the idea that it's a shameful thing to love a Big Mac, like a guilty pleasure. I don't eat McDonald's anymore, I gave up fast food years ago, but I will admit I find their french fries and McChicken sandwiches delicious. So I like the ad. And it's funny.

I love Jim Gaffigan. The first time I ever watched his standup I literally fell off my couch laughing.

"They're so skinny they can't be fattening!"

Oh and Laurie, just clarify...i did not share that link in response to your post to suggest that you were lying about not eating there anymore (that part makes me laugh though). I only shared it because it just seemed like the perfect fit when talking about McDonald's shame LOL.

I'm sure you gathered that, but you know...i still feel I have to outright say it to be sure Smile

I do suffer from severe depression and think that it is in poor taste. I do not find it funny. There is so much stigma about mental illness that we do not need ads like this mocking it.

I actually don't feel like it's mocking depression. In fact, had that not been what the article was about, I wouldn't have connected depression to the ad at all, it seemed more about food shame to me, which is why I like the ad.

Kept forgetting to come back to this.

I agree...I don't see the leap and wanted to get other impressions on it.

It is not a leap when very similar pictures are used in mental health promotions.

The title of the post asks if the ad is offensive to people with depression, I have severe depression and the picture IS mocking to me. Your views are your views but I doubt if you suffered from depression that you would feel the same way.

But pictures like that are also used in headache medicine ads. I just don't think it is mocking depression or meant to do that. I'm sorry you're offended, but it still feels like a leap to me. I would not have connected those things and I am depression-savvy, I have friends who have suffered from it and my mom was a psychiatric nurse.

Aww, that is too bad. (I have not heard that expression in years! I used to say it all the time as a teenager.)

I'm sorry, I did not mean to highjack the thread by mentioning my Birth Mother's Death. Thank you for all your condolences. For those who wanted to know, I was adopted at 5 and reunited with Doreen and my sisters at 26.

Definite love of jim gaffigan for me too!!!

I don't think it's offensive, just a bit of an eye roller. I do think it's definitely a spin on the depression ads though.

I suffered from GAD for years and I've been that guy in the pic, trust me. I think that was my usual pose in bed, waiting for the panic attacks to pass. Maybe I'm somewhat insensitive about it (not to others but applying it to my own issues), but I don't find it offensive at all.
