Anne of Green Gables

Anne of Green Gables gets blonde makeover in new cover | CTV News

Perhaps Amazon wasn't aware red pigtails are as much a part of Anne Shirley's identity as is her imagination and her gift of gab.

It will be interesting to see how they deal with the fallout of featuring a blonde Anne of Green Gables on the cover of a new 'Three- in One Set' collection of the classic novels by Lucy Maud Montgomery.

The collection is published by CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform -- which is owned by Amazon and sold on the site.

Calgary blogger Mike Morrison writes: 'Today will forever be known as the day the ginger died.' Josie Leavitt pleads with all publishers to 'please design the cover after you've read the book.'

This is just so very wrong!!! Anne is NOT blonde and never will be blonde.

I saw this and I was horrified! A huge part of the story is her red hair! I hate when companies feel that *THIS* is what will sell books. The story is fantastic and can sell itself.

LOL! This is so funny! Obviously nobody read the book, or saw the movie, or knows anything about Anne of Green Gables.

Actually, its pretty sad.

Incredibly thoughtless marketing move.

On a side note, that does remind me that I wanted to introduce one of my daughters now to "Anne with an E." Smile

Just showed the model's picture to DD1 (she read the series) and she was HORRIFIED!

I read the entire series (all 8 books) yearly! I think I started when I was 10 reading the series.

Really hated the prequel they did for the 100th anniversary - they changed the story of Anne's parents, her mom died but her father was an alcoholic who could not look after her.... so very wrong!

My DD is really freaked out. She says "not only is she not blond, she is not someone that tries to be sexy" She emailed the company

I have them all and read them every couple of years. It is one of my favorite series. I have been re-reading them for 20 years at this point!

This is totally wrong. Unacceptable.

I love LM Montgomery's works, especially the Akin to Anne short stories.

Since I am in my 40s I have been reading them for 30 years. I have also purchased the complete set 3 times! I now have the set on my ereader - they are free as they are over 100 years old, as well as having a paperback set.

Every year I read the following series: Anne, Harry Potter and the Little House books... plus a ton of other books. I tend to read 5-10 books/week which explains why I am on my second ereader Biggrin

HATE THIS!
No the original movies I think did the books well, I have watched them many times.. In college roommates and I even did a marathon and stayed up all night and watched them straight through.. loved it... this is upsetting! She was a TOMBOY, climbed up on the roof, wouldn't let anyone touch her bag.. she was a tough product of the "foster" system!

Well you will soon be able to get a very cheap copy Smile The reviews on Amazon are really trashing it so I imagine it will be bargain basement priced soon.

Everyone knows redheads are best, so why they'd even try to go blonde is beyond me. Wink

Terrible move. I bet some heads will roll for this mistake.....

I'm aghast at this. It is absolutely a critical part of the story that Anne is a redhead.

I don't think this is a mistake. I think this was well-planned by Amazon. Look how much publicity they are getting for a 100-year old book on which there is no longer copyright.

Ha ha Wink

Even though I wasn't much into the tv series, I did read the books, went to Lucy Maud Montgomery's house in PEI and all that, and to have anything other than a redhead Anne is sacrilege, IMO. Must be a redhead. It would be like Little Orphan Annie having a jet black mohawk or something.

Yep. I didn't watch the tv series although I've seen clips of it, but I read those books over & over as a kid.

It's like giving Rapunzel short hair!

After mentioning this thread discussion to my daughters, one of them found the movie on Youtube to watch this weekend. Was good but I always love the books more!

Totally bizarre move.

Like changing Pippi Longstocking to have short brown hair or something. You just don't take away a character's trademark look. Are they trying to, like, sex her up, or something? Yeesh.

I've never read the books, either! How many are in the series? I could use some new books for my Kindle Smile

There are 8 in the original series and then a prequel was written for the 100th anniversary. I know nothing about the Kindle as I have a Sony ereader but as the books are over 100 years old you should be able to download them for free (I did). If you need to list of titles just let me know.

A list would be great! I did find some on Amazon that were free, but some were $0.99.

I adore all of LLM's books. Her 'Story Girl' series is also really good and based on Avonlea and relatives and friends of Anne Shirley.

Yeah, on my kobo I have them all that I was able to download for free.
