If someone were to call someone else on this debate board a racist (whether or not it was true), I would say that yes, that is calling someone a name and not appropriate for this kind of forum.

I understand that people don't want to be called "bigot". But we can name something as bigotry as a *behavior* as opposed to an identity, can't we?

Gloria said above that homosexuality is a *behavior*, not an identity (I'm paraphrasing). For most people who do identify as homosexual, it is, in fact, an identity. For THEM. It is how they label themselves, and how they classify who they are. YOU don't consider it an identity, Gloria, but that doesn't change the fact that identity is both socially constructed *and* individually constructed. You are *against* the way a homosexual chooses to identify him/herself. Further, your logic applies in this case as well. If you attempt to insure that self-identified and other-identified homosexuals don't have the same rights as you, your *behavior* would be considered bigotry. You don't self-identify as a bigot, but you are engaging in bigotry.

You are not a bigot as an identity, but you practice bigotry against homosexuals actively. I think we can refrain from calling you a bigot (any of you), and still claim that some of your behavior is active bigotry by definition of the word.

    Is that helpful?

In the same way, I believe that when someone that calls a group of people bigots it is active bigotry.

If I was saying that you, as a CC, cannot partake in activities that I can..then yes I am a bigot. No one is telling you you can't but we are definitely telling the gay community they can't and that is what is bigoted view.

I didn't call a group of people bigots. I said you were engaging in bigotry.

I'm not engaging in bigotry unless I call you a bigot.

I would NEVAH suggest that one is a bigot just because they are conservative or a Christian! But if you are actively attempting to malign a group of people for their identity, and deny them rights, then you are engaging in bigotry.

I know a lot of conservative Christians who do neither, so I would never ever lump them together as a *group* of bigots.

Even if they said something that was TRULY racist? I'm picking Jewish because I'm Jewish, so it's safer: if I said "Jews are shifty, you can't trust them, and don't let them marry into your family and dilute the bloodline," then it's not inappropriate to call me a racist. It's not a bad word, it's not an insult, it's an accurate description of my view, which is a racist view.

If I said, "Conservative Christians have no opinions about anything that are worth listening to," (which is NOT what I believe), then that is bigotry, pure and simple. It's not about disagreeing with a belief, which would be more along the lines of, "I don't share their beliefs."

So if I say I don't think a man who is a Chippendale dancer should be a scout leader is that bigotry? I don't think it is.
