California quake (non-debate)

Just checking on our CA ladies to see if you and your families are doing OK following this morning`s quake! If anyone hears differently please let me know.

We're fine! We were having "family sleepover night" so DH & I were each sleeping with a kid, and we both woke up shortly before the shaking started, but the kids slept through it. At first it sounded & felt to me like a big truck out on the street, and I was wondering what a big truck was doing on our street at 0-dark-thirty, but then the house started shaking and I said, out loud, "Ah, it's an earthquake!" We all just stayed in bed & rode it out, it was a rolling kind of quake, not a shaking, jolting one. DH & I both got up, we didn't see anything out of the ordinary in back or in front. Our power was still on but we checked for gas leaks & listened for neighbors who might be in trouble, and then we checked the USGS website for info before we went back to bed.

Funny, my MIL out in the Sacramento area called us right after it ended, and she felt it stronger than we did even though we're closer to the epicenter, and in S.F. which is supposedly Earthquake Central. She said she thought if it was that strong out in her area, she thought for sure that we might have slipped off into the Pacific. Some friends in Napa had some minor damage. It seems most of the damage there was unsecured foundations, unreinforced masonry, and unsecured wine. I shudder to think what my wine bill might be next year with all that damage!

We did notice a few things we need to fix before THE Big One hits. We used to have fishing line in front of the books & CDs to keep them from sliding off; DH removed it all earlier this year when he was re-organizing all the shelves, so that needs to go back up. Some decorations on the mantle that were moved for cleaning need to be Museum Wax-ed back down. The back door shifted and the kids can't open it on their own; we'll need to get the landlord for this one, I think the whole door jam needs to be replaced. And we've still never put anything over the window in the kids room that it right over the beds!
