But it’s good to remind ourselves now and then that just as Southern slaveholders had a vested interest in interpreting Colossians 3:22 literally, so we tend to “pick and choose” to our own advantage.

    Can I have an AMEN!?!?!?!

    Great article.

Why not interpret Colossians 3:22 literally? There was no shame in being a slave it wasn't their fault.

22 Slaves, obey your earthly masters in everything; and do it, not only when their eye is on you and to curry their favor, but with sincerity of heart and reverence for the Lord. 23 Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, 24 since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving. 25 Anyone who does wrong will be repaid for their wrongs, and there is no favoritism.
Slave traders however were condemned right along with homosexuality. And yes liars and murderers too. It is all the same.
    1 Timothy 1:9-11
9 We also know that the law is made not for the righteous but for lawbreakers and rebels, the ungodly and sinful, the unholy and irreligious, for those who kill their fathers or mothers, for murderers, 10 for the sexually immoral, for those practicing homosexuality, for slave traders and liars and perjurers—and for whatever else is contrary to the sound doctrine 11 that conforms to the gospel concerning the glory of the blessed God, which he entrusted to me.

Really? Slave traders, murders, and liars, and gay people? All the same?

    That seems reasonable to you?

    Yikes.

Well, the good news is that once they were on the plantations, there was no more actual slave TRADING going on, so it was all cool. No shame in being a slave, after all!

I miss that "trainwreck in progress" blinkie. Is that still somewhere?

I can't speak for Gloria, but I would guess that she was not saying that being gay was the same as killing someone. I believe she was saying that the Bible speaks against Slave trading, just as it also speaks against homosexuality and murder. I do not know any person that is against homosexual marriage that would put it on the same level as the above mentioned actions.

They are all sin. The sin is exactly the same. The grace of Jesus covers a murderer just the same as a liar. If you repent of killing someone or repent of lying your slate is washed clean just the same. That doesn't mean the consequences of all sins are the same. You still have to pay the consequences for your actions.

You lost me. How can all sin be the same if the consequences aren't?

To God it is all the same. If you ask for forgiveness no matter what the sin is, it is just like it never happened. That doesn't mean we won't face punishment or consequences for our sin here on earth, whatever that may be. The thief hanging on the cross next to Jesus still died for his actions, even though Jesus forgave him.
