    Default Evil

Are people born evil or is it learnt (sort of) behaviour?

I have a spirtual belief that there is true evil out there, but I think for the most part people are humans who can do evil things.

I think this is going to turn religious quickly, but we'll see.

I think some people are born psychopathic. I think some people have chemical imbalances that make them "evil". And I think with enough abuse, someone can be turned what I guess I would call "evil". So it's both.

I agree. I don't think there is some unexplained force that just makes people evil. It is a host of complicated factors that make us act and make the choices that we do. Chemical, environmental, experiences, learned responses, instincts, etc. When people make "evil" decisions it is because all of those things combine in such a way that leads them to make said decision.

I think it is easier to help us understand why people do things that are unthinkable by calling them evil and blaming some force like the Devil.

I think that personality is like everything else, a mixture of nurture and nature. I think that people seem to be born with certain tendencies or propensity towards being a certain way, but how it all turns out still has an element of "environment" in it too.

I'm actually interested to know how people define "evil" anyway. All I can think is "E-veeel. Like the fru-its of the dev-eel." I don't believe in the devil (dev-eel?) so I don't believe in this sort of supernatural concept of evil. I do believe that some people are seriously whack though. So if you want to call "seriously whack" "evil" then I do believe in that.

I don't know if I could put what I think of as 'evil' into words. For me it is more of an emotional feeling about something and that may make so sense at all to others because I cannot verbalize it.

I believe in evil for the same reason I believe in the diffenent ends of a magnetic pole. I have a belief that everything has a opposite. (For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction, ying & yang, etc). So if I believe in good, I believe in evil.

    Ditto, Alissa.

For me evil is hard to define. It's not just about breaking laws, but something on a deeper level, I guess. Someone can break laws and not be evil. And someone can be evil but not break laws. I dunno...I don't like the word much. It doesn't really differentiate much between things like psychopathic behaviour that is due to a chemical imbalance or just being a plain mean or hateful person.

Nature and nurture. I feel like everyone has "evil cells" within them, that are dormant, and the type of nurture (or lack thereof) can activate the "evil cells."

Totally agree! I think that there are many factors in life that can make a person become evil as well as those people that are just born that way.

Classic! On my all-time fave flick list!!!!! "We've got a piper down. I repeat. A piper is dah-uuun!"

And I agree with everything else you said.
