"Family" portrait

Somehow this question became a cause for debate amongst siblings (not my own.)

Does a family portrait include parents or just the kids? (Is there really a *wrong* answer?)

Either or. I have had both.

Parents and kids, unless there is a reason why parents shouldn't or couldn't be involved.

parents and kids. If it is just of kids I would call it a picture of the kids.

See with this I think of my father's family. They have a family picture every year even though their parents have long since died. It is still a family picture. I live 750 miles from my parents and brother and sister. I only see my family a few times a year. If I wanted to surprise my mom and dad with a picture of the three of us, I would still call it a family picture.

Now with my girls still being little and living at home I would not call it a family picture unless all five of us were in it.

Mostly to me it means parents and kids. However, to DH's Oma that means her and all her children, their spouses and children, their spouses and children etc. etc. etc. I think the last time we all posed for a 'family portrait' there was 30 of us.

Here is our last family portrait with all of us including children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren and their spouses. Not everyone was there we were still missing about 15 people. But I would usually classify a family portrait as parents and children.
