Fireworks

For fun.

Do you think fireworks should be illegal? Why or why not?

Why should they be illegal?

For the last several hours there has been constant bombing like sounds. No different than any war time movie I have seen. Not just the people setting off those fireworks have to listen. Every person around has to listen. It is almost 10:30 PM. What if I had to be up at 4am for work the next day? You are talking about hours of noise that I am sure will continue past midnight. My FB is full of people talking about their dogs and how terrified they are (we do not have a pet). I can see from my porch small children about 2 feet from fireworks going off. I can tell you from experience that tomorrow AM on the local news will be at least one person seriously hurt from a firework accident.

I am not talking a town or big organization having a trained person setting of a firework display. I am talking about every other house having fireworks in the street.

For the truly dumb....yes, they should be illegal. But, you can't outlaw stupidity unfortunately so why spoil the fun for the sensible people? Here private citizens can't have fireworks on their property or city property, but we have land outside the city where we can have fireworks, which we do on some long weekends (as long as we call the local farmer and let him know so he can keep his cows in the barn. For real. Smile

See out in the country would be one thing. In the middle of the city where the houses are 12 feet apart? You are keeping a lot of people up at night.

PS. Still going strong at 11:11pm.

I don't think they should be illegal. If it was occurring every night, or many many nights throughout the year then i think people could be stopped by noise ordinances. But I think to make them illegal because around a single holiday people set off a lot of them is overboard and a bit crotchety.

As for safety, i agree with Lisa. Yes fireworks are dangerous, but plenty of people use them without incident.

And they are illegal here in NY and they've been going off all night anyway in my parents very suburban neighborhood so....

The fireworks are still going off at a quarter to midnight.

It is not only the 4th of July. New years is worse.

I am sure I am just being grumpy because I wish I was home for July 4th. It is the biggest holiday there. Everyone does their own thing for Christmas and other holidays. July 4th was the one holiday where all the Aunts, Uncles, Cousins came in for a great big get together. Here, it is just noisey.

Legalities aside, I think it is downright disrespectful that there are still fireworks going off at 12:37 AM. Grumpy or not, I do not think I would appreciate that.

I'm sorry you couldn't be with your family.

Thank you.

I think that they may have finally stopped. The last one I heard was at 1:15AM and Caitlyn is finally back asleep.

It is 11:21 here and I see no end in sight for fireworks, we have 2 different neighbors that do them all night. It is only one night though and I think that part of living with neighbors is living with noises they make every now and then.

I am a little touchy about this tonight though. Half way through our city's fireworks show my brother got called out on a forest fire, started by fireworks. Since the 19 died in AZ I am really worried about him this year.

They are illegal for personal use here, only licensed pyrotechnicians can purchase them for events, except in the two territories. I do know the Northern Territory they are only for sale for Territory day I believe (I used to live out near the border and we got all the ads on tv for the NT), not sure about the ACT and when they are available. I see no issue with it, but I have also never experienced anything different

When I was a kid, we used to throw Victoria Day parties and my mom would do all the fireworks in our backyard. We loved it. As we headed back to the car last night I was telling my son about it. Barbecues, swimming, and my mom running across the lawn after lighting one. Of course we wrapped up early.

So yeah...I don't think people in suburban/urban areas should be able to set off big fireworks after a certain hour. I have no idea how you could enforce that, though.

Sorry for all of you dealing with it. I could still hear distant fireworks late last night but it wasn't loud enough to be a problem. I just watched the Star Trek: TNG marathon on BBC America. Smile

They are illegal here but people still shoot them off but not to a crazy degree. I'm fine with them being illegal (for personal use). Keeps down the craziness you all speak of.

Two of my brother in laws are firefighters as well. It can be scary.

I used to live down near the Stampede grounds and it was 10 straight nights of fireworks after the grandstand show. Thing is, here it doesn't get really dark until 11:00 in the summer so you'd have to endure a massive fireworks show for about 1/2 an hour every night. I never even tried to go to bed before the show started or I'd be jerked awake by the sound and light!

Most of the big noisy ones are illegal for personal use because of the fire risk. You can do sparklers and small fountains and poppers and the like, but not the big ones that shoot up in the air. I agree with it, because of the fire risk. CO is sooooo dry this time of year (although ironically it rained last night. Lol and you may have heard of the huge forest fires we've been dealing with.

Having said that, I love fireworks and definitely don't mind the noise once a year. I wouldn't be setting them off late at night, but I honestly don't think it would bother me if the neighbors were. Then again, we are all pretty sound sleepers and our dog doesn't get upset by them, so that's easy for me to say.

I'm sorry you are missing your family. That is hard.

I love fireworks and it has been so much fun since we moved to a neighborhood that is out of the city limits. Our neighbors really did it big last night as usual, we don't really have to spend as much because they have so many. We were still hearing fireworks well after midnight. It was kind of funny because towards about 10:30 when we were kind of winding down because we were running out a car drove up and a woman and her son got out and asked if they could pop their fireworks in our driveway because they live in the neighboring town and can't do them there. I guess since we had a big crowd of teenagers out there making noise already they figured we wouldn't mind. We said sure the more the merrier Smile

They are illegal in S.F. and I'm glad! The buildings are all pretty much smack up against one another, and there aren't any real driveways or decent-sized lawns, so no really safe place to do them because the streets are too busy, as well. The city puts on a huge fireworks display over the bay. We can usually see them from the top deck of our building, some years we've gone to a nearby park to watch them, once we climbed up onto our roof for a better view. The areas around here that do allow fireworks only allow the "safe & sane" kind -- sparklers, fountains, smoke balls, ground spinners, but nothing that explodes or shoots up -- and sometimes we see those being set off in the street or in someone's backyard. This year our neighbors behind us had some sparklers, which are usually very safe, and they still managed to set someone's pants on fire! Thankfully he was fine, he did the stop-drop-roll and someone else turned a hose on him, but it was scary to witness from over the fence with my kids. Alcohol & fireworks are never a good mix. There was also a sad story out of nearby Richmond, where fireworks are also illegal, this year. A couple died when their developmentally-disabled son set himself on fire playing with fireworks after everyone else went to bed; he was critically burned but they were apparently too drunk to wake up and/or get out.

The firecrackers for Chinese New Year are what keep me awake. And it's a two-week festival! My cat won't even go outside at Chinese New Year. She just sits in the back window and cries.

I saw that last night and thought of this thread. I think the fireworks are annoying, but I would not try to hurt anyone.

Although not as bad as the 4th, we are still having some go off each evening into the night. I also am not talking about little normal fireworks. We have had large fireworks that would be at a city display. I think this year has been so much worse because a new firework store opened up and because all of the rain cancelled major displays so people went out and had their own.
