We weren't a camping family so it may be partly why I don't camp. As I said, we did the RV/campground thing twice and I still wasn't a fan. I want a bed and AC in the summer and creature comforts...when I was kid that meant color tv with cable, a game room and a pool.
We just buy a few packs of Fantasy Fire - all that copper oxide and stuff makes the fire turn green, blue and purple. It's non toxic.
This thread makes me want to go camping now  . The only times we've done tent camping was twice when the boys were in Cub Scouts. We luckily didn't have to worry about any of the food, since the Pack provided that. I always love s'mores while camping.
I'm going to have to see if there are some places to camp with the boys this summer, since we're not doing any other trips this summer.
This thread is having the opposite effect on me. :) lol
Oh, I disagree! LOL It's all camping....it's just that some means are more comfortable than others.

When I was growing up we started out tent camping...literally from the time I was a baby. Probably when I was 6 or so, my parents bought one of those pop up trailers, that are like half-tent, half-camper. Then later they bought a small camper, and every few years they replaced it with a bigger one. By the time I was an adult they had a diesel truck and a huge 5th wheel, which they still camp in regularly late into their 60's.
I do agree that there's something about tent camping that is a different experience and I do want my kids to have that experience sometime. But I prefer to do my tent camping next to my parents RV where I can use a toilet and shower that is not a nasty public one with bugs. ;)
Yeah i don't really get the thing about who owns the word camping. I used to kind of be all about the 'tenting is camping' thing...but as I've gotten older, i really don't care.
We just got a new 3 bedroom tent for this summer. I think it will be a lot of fun and should last us for years to come.
We've been debating whether to get a larger tent or not. We have a four-person tent which is just fine for the four of us, and DH has a single-person tent that he takes backpacking sometimes. Last summer we took a friend of Tiven's camping and DH slept in the single tent and I slept in the larger tent with the kids. But it would be nice to have some parental privacy!
I'm starting to freak myself out about our July camping plans. We'll be in "bear country" in a developed campground but the reservation website warned that we will need to lock up everything scented at night in the bear locker or the car. I've read yelp reviews that say things like, "We saw a mama & baby bear in the meadow the last morning we were there," and "When they say put everything in the bear locker, they mean it, but we did get some great pictures of Smoky noshing on the bagels." Thankfully there are no reviews that mention a companion being eaten by a bear. Here's my dilemma: I have a teeny tiny bladder. It doesn't matter how much I don't drink, or whether I pee right before going to bed, I always have to pee at least once in the middle of night. (I was actually surprised during my first pregnancy to hear women complain about needing to get up to pee; I thought it was normal.) Our campsite is close to the restroom but now I'm getting freaked about running into a bear during a pee-run. DH, who goes backpacking in bear country, says there's nothing to worry about, just shine a light all around before heading out and carry a bell. Sounds easy enough but I actually had a dream last night where I got onto the elevator at work and there was a bear in it. I just acted like it was totally normal for a bear to be in the elevator, asked him (or her?) what floor they needed in case they couldn't push the button with their big paws. I pushed the second floor and got off and took the stairs the rest of the way. And I only have two more months until that trip, LOL! :p
I am sure you will do great!
We already have a 4 person tent, but we have outgrown it. I think this will be a lot bigger than we need, but I would rather bigger than smaller. I also am excited to have 3 rooms :)
I love this thread and the food ideas in it.
We are campers. We used to tent camp, but for the last three years my dh has been refurb'ing a 1969 Airstream. It is a beast of a thing-- 29 feet long. But it gives us creature comforts that are helpful when camping with five kidlets. It was a wreck when we bought it, but he gutted it and rebuilt it from the floor up and now it is awesome.
We have reservations for 6 nights in Yellowstone at the end of June and I'm really looking forward to it. This will be our first trip with five.....and I'm excited about how much the kids love camping.
It is always exhausting and dirty and trying, but so worth it IMO. We like hotels, too, but the Colorado in us likes to be out in the wild. And with our kids, it is much more affordable than hotels for big trips.
And Spacers, we totally hear you on the bear things. It has hubby freaked out, too. LOL.
We have the luxury of things like a stove and a refrigerator and a sink, but I pre-make many of our meals and eat simply while we are camping.
