Is it that you didn't do it as a kid or a young adult, so now it feels like you are just giving up comfort?
I don't like being away from "civilization". I don't like lying on the ground. I don't like being cold at night. I don't like being around bugs. I don't like being away from bathrooms and coffee makers and creature comforts. I am not an outdoorsy girl. I don't like feeling isolated...it scares me like those movies about dangers in the woods.

Basically I am a city wimp. I didn't end up in NYC randomly. I am one of those people who never feels that "I have to get away from the city" urge. My idea vacation is in another city like Paris or Amsterdam.

It was actually a quincy which looks like an igloo but made differently. You make a huge pile of snow and let it sit for several hours to a day, you then start digging out the snow until you are left with a hollow shell. I slept about 5 hours in it and was quite warm.

The secret to camping in the winter or a cold night is blankets and such BELOW you to protect you from the cold earth. Also changing out of everything ie new socks, new underwear, new pants, etc The only time I have really wimped out when camping it was raining, water was coming into my tent and I had a cast on my one leg. I left my tent and slept in the car.

We love camping and I love camping food. I am with everyone on the tinfoil meals, I put all our meals together before we go and then put each meal in separate bags, makes it all so easy.
I also make up big patches of potato salad, fruit salad, and green salad to add to each meal.
We bought a travel trailer last year and I do have to say I dont miss tent camping.

Camping in the rain with a cast is hardcore camping.

To be honest, I'm not a big fan of camping. I grew up near mom2robbie and the nature there is gorgeous, best in the world. But I hated camping as a kid and a Girl Guide, mostly because I hate public toilets and campground toilets are the worst. It was better when I was old enough to drink. LOL.
Even now I wouldn't say to my friends "hey let's all go camping!" But I know that it's a skill I want my kids to have. I hope my kids never need wildnerness survival skills but I'll give them to them just in case. And to my hopeless city boy husband, who thinks camping means renting a beachside cabin.

We always have spaghetti for a dinner, cause it is easy to cook noodles and heat sauce. And when it was adult only camping that sauce had a decent dose of red wine to it. And for breakfast I like trail mix pancakes with syrup. These are odd traditions that come from camping in the bush with friends when I was in university.

LOL, never thought camping with a cast was hard core... I was 12 so had no choice but to go with my family.

Funny thing is that I have done little camping since moving to Alberta, most of my camping has been done in Southern/Central Ontario. Camping May 2-4 weekend (Victoria Day holiday for the Americans) I have camped at Algonquin Park a bunch of time, that is where it snowed on me! Spiked hot chocolate helped.

Does anyone add stuff to their campfires to get coloured flames?

    Calcium red flame
    Copper green flame
    Sodium orange flame
    Lithium pink flame
    Lead blue flame
    Potassium purple flame
    Barium light green flame

My dad is a chemist so we used to always throw things into the fire at home but we never did it while camping. Of course I can only remember two camping trips with him so maybe I've just forgotten that part. But it sure was fun at home, and I've done it with my own kids, too! And flour explodes. Poof! That's always a fun one for my kids.

Oh goodness. We LOVE camping, I cook with the dutch oven in the campfire a lot.. Some of our faves are huge oven type pancakes, and Breakfast casseroles for breakfast in the oven. I also wrap up a whole chicken and put it in the middle of the fire after seasoning.. YUMMO. We have cooked everything from seafood and steaks to hotdogs and smores. For Dessert there are some easy recipes for dump cake. We do bring a propane stove too, that I have used for hamburgers and heating water for oatmeal in the am.. and heats water fast for coffee or washing dishes..

When we go camping we often go for a whole week.

Did not know about the colored flames! I'll definitely want to try that.
