Fluff: horizontal stripes on clothing

Should they ever be worn at all? And, if they are worn, shouldn't you make sure that the stripes stay horizontal? For example, if you don't have enough bosom to fill a shirt out, and the stripes kind of schlump inwards, should you not wear that shirt?

I avoid horizontal stripes in most cases. Even the skinniest people I know look wide in it. So unflattering.

I can't picture your bosom example though...hmmm

I like horizontal stripes and they look nice on me as long as they end before they get to my hips.

I think you would need to be very skinny to pull it off. I would look 6 months pg.

I am such a dork! I look down to see I am wearing horizontal stripes. They are very pastel though and it does not have the same effect as bright stripes would.

Sometimes they are very flattering. I have a few where the dark (black) stripes hit at just the right place to help define my waist.

I agree. I have a black and white striped shirt (wide stripes) that I think looks great even though I'm not super skinny because it accentuates my boobs and my waist.

Oh, you're so cute in that top! Blum 3 I wish I could have snapped a pic of the women I saw today. Just imagine if your top had been designed & cut for someone with gazonker boobs, such as my own (40G), and then you put it on your flat chest. Imagine how the front would kind of sag, which with another material you might be able to say it draped nicely, kwim? But with horizontal stripes it was just.... weird & kind of sad. The stripes sagging in front really emphasized that there was no boobage behind them.

I don't generally wear stripes period. Horizontal or vertical. I have one 2-tone blue tshirt with horizontal stripes and it actually makes my waist look smaller. Weird. Maybe because it makes my boobs look bigger.

You know I love you but I hate that you have 5 kids and have the face of a 21 year old and a body that looks like it's never seen pregnancy. Wink

And okay, YOU can rock stripes. I change my original stance.

Definitely no horizontal stripes on me. Vertical? Well, it's just I try to avoid the whole inmate and referee look. Fine pen stripes mens' dress shirts look nice mostly though.

Holy cow yes. Kim, I think I wore that size jeans once, in 10th grade. Though, I'm built like a female wrestler. Wink

Me too. I wear them constantly. I just try to be careful on weekends so the kids aren't striped too. . .we look silly when all together sometimes. But I wear a lot of stripes. I find them flattering!

Well in honor of this thread, i just had to tell you all that I picked up a steal this past weekend. The Gap had a 70 dollar dress on the sales rack with a damage discount because the zipper was broken. It was still 40 dollars and there was no way i was going to pay 40 dollars for a dress that was in a state where you couldn't even wear it! I left it there and then Gap had a big sale and i went back and got the dress for 17.50.

I'm so excited! I'm going to be wearing it to a wedding this weekend. Its navy blue and white stripes, pleated skirt, optional spaghetti straps and its pretty darned cute. The zipper? A breeze to fix.

So i just had to share my excitement.

Smile

Pics of that dress, please!

Also, since I started this thread, I must admit that I've now realized that one of my own favorite tops is horizontal stripes! It's a Lands End v-neck t-shirt with tiny beige & white stripes. It fits me well, the stripes don't sag across my boobs, nor are they stretched out, it's really cute & I love it!

Here's a picture from the wedding. The rest of the girls in the pic are my lovely and awesome sisters-in-law

Dress was great, i got a few compliments on it. HOWEVER, that zipper is *weak*. The dress fits me well and isn't too tight or anything (i hope you can tell that in the pic) but Seamus picked me up at one point and it put some pressure in the sides and the zipper teeth came apart again! Fortunately for me, my one SIL brought a change of clothes, that I wore for the rest of the night or else I would have had to go home! Seamus is taking it to a tailor today. He had to bring his suit to be tailoried for his sister's wedding in two weeks and he took the dress with him and we're getting that zipper replaced.

Too bad, it will add to the overall cost of the dress, but thats okay. I really like the dress and it will be worth it.
