GA won't let KKK "adopt" a highway

http://www.cnn.com/2012/06/12/us/georgia-kkk-highway/index.html?hpt=hp_t3

It's not the first time the KKK was petitioned to adopt a stretch of highway to keep clean. In the MO case, the highest court that ruled on it said the KKK could adopt the highway. SCOTUS refused to hear the case, so that ruling stands.

What do you think? Should the KKK be afforded the same opportunity as other groups to clean up trash along the highway? Since their petition was denied, should they contact the ACLU?

I really want to say that they should not be allowed to form a group and adopt a section, but I cant think of any legal reasons why. Is hate groups a legal reason?

This is a tough one for me. When you adopt a highway, you get the name of your organization put up on a sign....i feel like it almost acts like a promotion or free advertising for your group. I could see an argument that a government should not have to promote an organization that they feel is detrimental to some fundamental principals of our nation. But i don't know how that could really hold up, seems like it hasn't in the past.

I mean, if they get to decide they don't like this organization based on that philosophy, they could use that same sort of discretion against any organization they want so....i don't know.

I guess the KKK should get their piece of highway if they want it but i'll just say my heart isn't bleeding over the fact that they have met a roadblock or two.

No! They're a horrible, hateful group. They shouldn't be allowed to even exist, I don't give a flying rats *** about anything else.

As long as their actions aren't criminal, why shouldn't they have the right to exist? Just because I don't agree with their message, doesn't take away their first amendment rights. There are a lot of organizations/groups that I don't think should exist because of their message but that opens a huge can of worms as to who gets to decide who can gather and who can't.

I can see a lawsuit going forward due to the MO ruling. Unless SCOTUS takes on the case, what else can GA do?

I had heard once that when the KKK adopted a part of a highway, too many other people passing through on the road would vandalize it and litter it purposefully and the KKK couldn't keep up. It became such a problem they revoked it. Not sure if this is a true story, but I remember hearing it once.

Wouldn't doubt it... Purposefully littering to give them more work to do was my first thought when reading the OP.

Oh, there's an idea. Also I'd come up with litter that they might find offensive, so it would really bug them to see it.

As much as I despise what they stand for and their purpose-- I can't see denying them this.

I don't like it, but wouldn't want to venture into territory where the government decides which groups can exist and which cannot. So long as they do nothing illegal.....

To me this is kind of like the Westboro group, they have the right to protest as much as I hate the way they do it. KKK should have the same rights as any other group even though I don't agree with what they stand for.
