Spoiled. I got my birthday present two days early today. I wanted a silver chain for Bailey's medallion and got one with a heart medallion with an R for Robbie.

So glad you had such a great trip Laurie!

We had a busy weekend! We met my parents down in Chicago Friday evening, after Nathan's color belt graduation for TKD, and stayed at the Swissotel for the night. Luckily the boys stayed in their suite, and dh and I got a lovely room with an awesome soaking tub. We visited the International Association of Fire Chiefs convention for a couple of hours on Saturday, where the boys got their fill of fire trucks. Some of them were HUGE! After that we had lunch down on Michigan Avenue, and walked down to Niketown...Matt and Nathan are all hopped up on Michael Jordan right now, so they wanted some Air Jordan stuff. We really wanted to go up in the Sears Tower, since it was a completely clear sky, but there was a 2+ hour wait...passed on that. We just headed home after that.

Today I had my 18 mile training run...5 more weeks until my first marathon - yikes!! Now I just want to be lazy, but laundry calls.

Happy Birthday a few days early!

I just reached a milestone in my cake decorating skills. I piped roses that look like real roses. Previously my roses have all been make out of marshmallow fondant or have been rosettes. I had tried piped roses one other time and they were a complete failure. This time I used Wilton frosting that was for making roses and it went a lot better. After I made several out of the Wilton frosting, I was able to make some out of normal frosting, but it worked better with the Wilton frosting. Still a lot harder than it looked on youtube.

I will post one when it is finished. I did the flowers first, then the cake. Right now I have the crumb coat on. Next I will do a basket weave and put the flowers and leaves on.

I need to catch up, i have no idea whats been going on on this thread as of late!

I just had to share a little highlight of my day so far. My mother in law sent me a video of Emma and Aodhan at her house playing my father-in-law's ukuleles. They taught themselves to play soul sister!

Neither of them play the ukulele. Emma takes piano and Aodhan takes electric guitar lessons, which i guess with the guitar it can be hard to transition from one stringed instrument to another. At least thats what I've been told...i know very little about playing music.

I think thats why I'm always in such awe when i can see what those kids can do. They understand music at their age in a way I will never understand it!

Nice cake Bonita! Have you tried a royal icing for flowers? I am no expert, that is just what my mom always used

I have 2 sick boys today. Baby was running a fever yesterday, no fever today, but he is super grumpy and wont eat without advil in him. I am thinking maybe a sore throat? Not sure, he is happy playing now that I gave him something, but basically layed on me and cried all morning. DS1 just started running a fever today. He says his tummy hurts, but still managed to choke down a cookie and some cereal this morning. He just crawled into our bed and fell asleep though, so I really dont think he feels too good. I am a bit concerned that he isnt wearing a pull up on my bed though, so I might have to wake him up in a few, or try to sneak a pad under him.

Through all that I am trying to prepare for my parents coming. At this point I have thrown my hands up and the house is as is. I am washing their sheets and cleaned the motor home for them to stay in (we only have one spare bedroom and they are bringing my niece). I hope they dont catch what my boys have.

Oh know Kyla, I hope your boys are better soon and no one else gets sick.

I have not tried Royal icing. The first time I tried to make the flowers I just used normal Betty Crocker frosting. That was an utter failure. This time I bought the Wilton frosting. It worked much better, but I ran out of that kind of frosting. I used normal frosting for the red roses, but they did not turn out as well as the other ones. For the green leaves I used normal frosting and added in some powder sugar to make it stiffer. That helped a lot. I think next time I will either try to find a good recipe to make my own frosting or use normal frosting and add powder sugar. I am on the hunt for a really great frosting recipe though because I do make a lot of cakes and I spend too much in frosting. It would be better to make my own. None of the recipes I have tried make a good spreading consistency though. They do fine for spreading flat, but not for making fancy accents.

That cake is stunning! I have a hard enough time just doing plain ol' icing.

The boys start school on Wednesday, so today dh and I went out and got the rest of their school supplies - minus a couple of things I couldn't find. We also did haircuts yesterday for the younger boys, and I got Matt new shoes. The kid is almost 12, and wears a 10.5 men's shoe! He's not that tall yet (just over 5'2"), so they look like clown feet. I'm off the next two days so we can meet Nathan's teacher tomorrow, drop off his supplies, and enjoy their last day of freedom. I like to be off their first day of school, too...gotta get that "first day of school" picture.
