What are you guys doing for the upcoming long weekend? We are camping with a bunch of friends/family. Last hurrah of the season. Le sigh....We do camp year round, but the summer long weekends when everyone's together are pretty much over.

Yesterday I took Claire shopping for school clothes and I got her 3 pairs of shoes, 2 pairs of jeans, 2 skirts, 3 pairs of leggings, a pair of Helly Hansen polar fleece pants, and 10 shirts for $175. Oh, and that included 2 pairs of shoes for SIL's baby girl, due in a couple months. I could've done twice the damage, but DH wouldn't have liked that too much. He was happy it was under $200.

Today I'm breaking the news to my bosses that starting next week I won't be coming in until 8:20 each day. Gotta take Claire to school, and that's the way it is. They can either accept it or not. My family comes before my job.

Umm....we are slaughtering pigs labor day weekend.

Not the most glamorous of labor day weekends.

Obviously kids won't be involved in that process...even if they know whats going on.

My three middle kids start school Wednesday. I took Wed - Fri off and I' hoping to go do some fun things with Emma.

Kim, I'm not coming over. Eek.

The kids don't start until the 9th! Labor Day is also our anniversary this year (12th!). On Saturday a friend of mine is taking the kids just for the day so we can have some time alone to celebrate. Sunday we have a friend coming over who is adored by all four of us. She loves Dave's cooking and my baking too, so it's just one big festival. Monday I guess we'll celebrate our anniversary with the kids, hah! Sometimes we like to go back to the park where we were married, if the weather's nice.

I'm going to miss my summer Fridays. I really made the most of each one.

Kim, do you do the slaughtering too? Like, you actually kill the pigs? A bit morbid, but exactly how is that done? Is there like one of those humane horse helmet things? Sorry, just curious

Yes, Seamus and his brother will do the slaughtering and butchering. This is the first year that we will be doing this but they feel very confident they can do it and have done a lot of research. They also do their own deer each year too. Seamus just did our two roosters yesterday.

The whole slaughtering thing is definitely not my thing. I would be happy to be far away at the time!

I sent you details on the 'how tos' via PM because well, i couldn't find any delicate way to provide the info and I was afraid it might just be too much detail for some people.

We are up in the air on our labor day plans. If we can find a camp site still open, we might go camping. Or we might try to find a nice deal on a hotel with a pool. Or we might just stay home and spend time together. Either way, I am excited about a 3 day weekend.

Anyone got any ideas for a romantic day that doesn't include an overnight stay anywhere? We could just go home and hang out, which can be quite romantic of course, but I've been trying to figure out if I should plan something else. We'll probably have from just before lunch to just after dinner to ourselves.

It is kind of funny because my Mother is 85 and one of my sisters has been typing up her diary from when she was young so we can all read it. My Grandpa was a cotton farmer and so my Mom and her sisters had to help work the farm. We were laughing at one of the entries because it was just so matter of fact.... killed hogs. Went to school .... like it was just a boring everyday thing. Here is a sample of some of the entries, it has been really fun reading it. Girls definitely weren't wimps in those days. What about a walk along the waterfront, or (non playground) park, and a picnic lunch somewhere a bit secluded? In the winter DH and I like to buy some fancy coffee and snacks and drive up to a nice look out point nearby. A fancy dinner is also a good option.

We are going to my Grandfathers 90th birthday party in southern Alberta this weekend. It kind of sucks that we will basically be in the car for 2 days of a 4 day weekend, but this is a big deal and all the aunts, uncles and cousins will be there. He has inoperable cancer and they told him last January he would only had a few months left. Since then he has been doing so well the nursing home tried to take away his palliative care bed I doubt he will make it till his 91st though.

I am hoping we are able to leave Thursday afternoon and get to Calgary that night. Then we can stay with family and have a few hours Friday to get some shopping done. Unfortunately, DH might be in court on Friday and not be able to come with us, which means me driving with all 3 kids. The big kids are awesome travelers, but last time we traveled we had to stop a lot for the baby, and only averaged 5 hours a day.....and that was with DH! Hopefully things will be better now that he is a bit older (that was in January, when we made our 'last' trip to visit Grandpa), cause we have another big drive coming up in the middle of September.
