Laurie, please do keep me posted on the surgery. If it is a success I might try to coax DH into it.

I will. He's already feeling SO much better and even beginning to breathe through his nose again a wee bit.

So its about -20 here, with a ton of new snow (at least a foot and a half). When the kids went out to play in the yard today DS1 made his way all the way to the deck railing.....and licked it. Do I need to clarify they are metal railing? DD ran in to get me and I took out a cup of hot water to pour over his tongue, which was still stuck to the railing. I dont know how many times I have told him not to lick things when it is cold out! Guess this is just a right of passage for a norther kid.

I am responsible for my boss's Inbox. I have to sort all his emails into his subfolders - litigation, environmental, wholesale, HR, corporate, blah blah blah. He usually has a couple thousand emails for me to handle every week. Last week I'm sorting his mail and I come across an email from someone else in the dept - a fellow smoker of his - a chick who I do not get along that well with. Anyway, the week before last when both kids were sick I had to call in because I couldn't send them to the dayhome with puking and fevers (obviously). The email from her has a subject line of "updated legal report" so I'm thinking it's something I have to file. Because my view is set up so I can read emails without opening them I see the email between the two of them: He took the email I sent him saying that my kids were sick and I wouldn't be in and he forwarded it to her with the commentary "I think they should get environmental tests done in that house." She replied "No kidding!!". I was freaking pi$$ed, humiliated, betrayed, and generally not trusting him whatsoever. I confronted him last Friday afternoon. I went into his office with the email and asked him about it and he just kept reading the email over and over, just trying to figure out what to say in response (keep in mind he's a lawyer). He said "I didn't mean it to be a joke. I was being serious about you needing to have air quality testing in your house". I almost fell off my chair in disbelief. I do not for one second believe a word of it and I'm insulted that he thinks I'm that stupid. You're serious? Yet you forward my confidential email to another party not even privy to that information and make a 'serious' comment about the air quality in my house? He knows my son has asthma, he knows they spenht 50 hours a week with our caregiver, he knows how incredibly stressful Ben's health has been to me and DH and yet he forwards my email to a coworker I do not get along with because he feels like getting her feedback about the environmental 'risks' in my house? I told him he was completely out of line and that I feel betrayed and that now I wonder how often I'm the butt of jokes out in the smoking area (or worse, my KIDS are the butt of jokes). No matter what he said to reassure me, I just don't believe him and I don't want to work with him anymore. There's no professional respect from me towards him. I've had a pi$$ poor week, but the upside is there's a chance I can go down to 3 days a week and not have to work for him anymore. Please keep your fingers crossed for me because if I don't get this new position I have the feeling I'll end up leaving a job that I like and that pays amazing.s

That is horrible! My fingers are crossed for you. You should not have to work in that kind of environment. So unprofessional!

There was a lot but it didn't even last the whole day. It was intense for a few hours, though.

What kind of surgery was it? Septoplasty?

Tonight there is an 80% chance of snow. It has not snowed here in 3 years I think. My girls are very excited although it will probably be less than an inch, still newsworthy for our part of TN.

This week has been very busy for us as my kids and husband are in the church Christmas play. Last night was opening night and it went very well.

Yesterday I also went to the doctor. It was a rather unsettling appointment. This was a new doctor going over my chart for the first time. He ran some tests and I am waiting on the results.

Thank you. I am hoping to hear some of the results tomorrow so I do not need to wait all the way until Monday. Some of the things they are testing for sounded kind of scary, so I hope it is ok.

My day? 10 hours in emergency with Rob to try and find out about his intense leg pain. It turns out that it might not be fibrous displaysea - it might be something else. The CT was suspicious. But they don't know what that something might be yet. But some of the things that it looks like are really not good. And whatever it is, it's aggressive. It has gone from not much to holy *** in 2 months. They admitted him to the hospital and gave him a lot of drugs. They will do an MRI in the morning. Now we wait and pray.

That's awesome! Congratulations.

Hope everything turns out okay, Bonita.

I have a phone interview today with someone at The Food Network. That job I've always wanted is available again. Fingers crossed. Also my local paper, where I do the recipe column, asked me to do some home improvement articles for an issue in the Spring. (Clearly they've never seen my home.)

And today, right after yoga, I'm going on a baking frenzy. The yoga studio is having a big event tomorrow afternoon and they asked if I'd bake for it if they covered ingredient costs. It's mini everything. Mini muffins, mini donuts, mini bundts, and cookies.

I am hoping this is a good sign for how the day is going to go, but I stopped at the grocery store on my way back from yoga and the cashier rung everything up and said, "That'll be. . .oh, nothing. You won your order for free."

$50 worth of groceries!

Well, finally figured out what was up with baby's funny walk today. He has flat feet. Like, no arch at all. We will be seeing a physiotherapist, though it doesnt sound like there is a ton they can do. I talked to her today and she said barefoot walking, which we do already. He has never had a pair of shoes with hard soles, and didnt wear any shoes at all until it got really cold. People at play group used to make fun of me for it. Anyways, he will also need special shoes, which we will have to go out of town to get. Nothing can really start until the new year of course (which is why I got some initial advice from physio), but it sounds like no matter what we do, this is a problem he will have his whole life.....yay. I am glad I insisted there was something wrong and persisted in getting things checked (finally saw an orthopedic surgeon today), but I almost wish I didnt know, since there is so little I can do for him.

Sorry about the flat feet. My best friend has flat feet and she just has to watch what kinds of shoes she buys.

Today was our first snow day. They canceled school so I took the kids to the city and we had a fun day there. Had lunch with the grampas and then headed to the market at Bryant Park. Fun!

My middle son has uber-flat feet, too. We just have to make sure we get shoes with a lot of arch support and good structure for him. Lucky for me he's already in men's sizes Beee

Ok I have to vent a little against the foster care system. It just drives me crazy that they can be so inept. My brother and his wife have been doing foster care on and off for quite a few years. They have 3 girls of their own but 2 of them have gone to college and the youngest is now in high school. So the last set of kids they were caring for were 3 siblings. At the time they got them they were 1, 2 and 4 years old, they were placed with them in August 2012. So about April of 2013 social services informed them that the status of the kids were going to change and they were going to be placed up for adoption, and if so would they want to keep them? They had been in their home for 9 months by that time and they had grown really attached to them, so they told social services they wanted to adopt the kids. So a month later in May 2013, all of a sudden social services came and took the kids out of daycare and moved them without even letting them say goodbye. They were just gone and they had no idea what even happened to them. So now last week, out of the blue, they called them and asked them if they wanted the kids back. No explanation whatsoever of where they have been the last 6 months. Of course they said yes and are thrilled to have them back, but still aren't sure if they are going to be able to adopt them or not. And people wonder why people don't want to adopt out of the foster care system, and why children in the foster care system are so emotionally damaged?

I am sorry Gloria. That is very hard. DH and I have been looking into adoption. Both through foster care and privately. The only thing keeping us from adopting from foster care is the fear of getting attached and then having the child taken back away. We might do it anyway just accepting that we will be broken hearted, but not until our girls are a little better able to understand.

The worst thing is they didn't really go into it planning to adopt, they have taken in quite a few kids over the years sometimes for months at a time. But the way they gave them the option then after they made the decision to adopt to rip them away like that without even saying goodbye just seems so cruel, not only for them but for the kids. Especially the 4 year old that probably felt completely abandoned. It's just so frustrating and it makes you wonder what is happening to other kids who are in the foster care system.

Oh, Gloria, that's awful! I'm glad that there are people who will take in foster kids, but it really does seem like both the kids & foster parents are treated like ****, cogs in a machine, pawns in a game, whatever. That's not how decent people should treat kids or the people trying to take care of them.

This is the reason that DH and I are waiting until our 4 are older to become foster parents. I have a good friend that works in Social services and she says it is too hard on Bio children when for whatever reasons the foster kids are taken away unexpectedly. She says that until the preteen years it leaves the bio kids feeling less then secure and worried they could be taken away

My DH isn't doing well. Sunday he developed a pain in his back & thought he'd pulled a muscle, but it didn't get better despite rest, ice, ibuprofen, tylenol, heating pad, and whiskey. Wink He felt a bit better on Monday but then by the evening he was literally doubled over in pain, gasping for breath from the pain; there were no urgent care appointments available and he refused to go to the ER. He had a doctor's appointment on Tuesday morning and his doctor said it might be a pinched nerve or it might be a kidney stone but it seems to be in the wrong place for either of those things. And for some reason she didn't order any testing while he was there! Then Tuesday night he started getting a tingling sensation spreading into his groin along with the pain that still nothing seems to be helping, so today he's going in for an x-ray and urinalysis. He was supposed to go out to his dad's place for a party tonight but that's out. I hope whatever it is doesn't spoil our plans for the Winter Solstice!

I hope you get an answer soon and the pain stops! Sounds terrible. Have them check his gall bladder too, that was excruciating and felt like it was in my back the first time it happened.

I am going to be doing some fun work for free for a guy who runs a website about chefs. I'll be interviewing awesome NYC chefs and writing articles. Fun!

They said the x-ray doesn't show any kidney stones, and the urine tests all came back fine with the exception of protein. The protein was a 30, which is in the "slightly elevated" range, and on its own not something to be concerned about. No signs of infection at least, that's definitely good. He's been alternating Tylenol & ibuprofen by the clock and the pain in his back is manageable, but his groin is still numb which is freaking him out. His doctor is supposed to call him back tomorrow morning but the advice nurse was stumped. I'll mention gall bladder to him to ask the doctor about.

I have been out for awhile my brother-in-law passed away from colon cancer and I went to Arizona to be with my sister. He had been fighting it for 4 years but it was a little unexpected because they have given him some promising news a couple months ago, but I guess after all the chemo his organs just couldn't take anymore. They told him they couldn't do anything else and he died a week later, so I guess it was a blessing in a way that he went fast at the end. It is just a difficult time for it to happen so close to Christmas.

I went to visit my son while I was over there and he just got orders and he is going to Okinawa, Japan in May. So I guess I am going to have to start learning Japanese and saving up for a plane ticket so I can go visit him. At least he can take his family there, he is looking forward to it they say the beaches are really beautiful.

Gloria, I'm sorry for your loss. It's so hard. My mom died on January 8th of last year and of course she's so much in our minds right now. I wish the best for you and your family, and I'm so sorry.

Wonderful that you will get to go to Japan. My sister goes snowboarding there almost every Christmas since she lives in Bangkok. That part of the world is beautiful.

Hello everyone!!

I hope you are all doing well. I just wanted to pop in here and say hi hello. I've been crazy busy and stressed for a very long time, having kids, raising them, having kids, having more kids...moving, moving, moving.. like for three years in a row we've moved. Always with a newborn or few months old. So, we're settled for a while here....in this very nice place in another country! Yes, Saudi Arabia. We moved here over the summer. It has taken some time to figure things out. But, we're settled into a routine and have caught the flow. Two are in school - first and third. They just turned 6 and 8 this past month or so. And my baby is 9 months old. So we have 4 boys and 1 girl now. She is two and so joyful; she knows that she is cute..loves jewelry and trucks.. Goodness goodness...

I can't tell you how happy we are. We feel like we are in heaven in every single way. I feel shy to describe the life we have but we feel like the luckiest people in the whole world. It's just the best place I've ever lived.

We have snow. (Granted it is less than an inch) My girls are so excited. Snow in this part of TN is a once a year or once every few years event. My parents in NY stopped measuring the snow awhile ago. This is the most snow they have had this early in years.

It is very cold here as well. I think it might get down to 19 or 20. I am so excited about it because we have not had a hard freeze to kill off all of the bugs in the last 2 winters. This is the very coldest it gets in this area.

Monday is supped to get down to 8 degrees. That is a big deal here. I know a lot of people that do not have central heat. Just a space heater in their bedroom. Also houses do not have insulation around the water pipes. Children also do not have the proper clothing for that kind of weather. I went to the store earlier and very few people had coats on, just sweatshirts.

I am glad about the bugs all dying off though.

I'm jealous of the snow. It's been so dry here. 2013 was California's driest year on record in many places. San Francisco got just four inches of rain all last year when our average is 21 inches. And then the cold snap we had a couple of weeks ago, which many of you will LYAO at me calling it "cold" but when it hits the 30s overnight for two weeks straight, that's considered Damn Cold here! We brought in or covered our plants so most of them survived, but our neighbor's big beautiful angel's trumpet tree is probably dead. It was still flowering in late November but now the flowers & leaves are all brown & shriveled & it looks so sad. I hope it can bounce back.

Aisha, I'm so glad you're doing well, and you sound so happy. What took you to Saudi Arabia? Is that where your DH is from?

And then the cold snap we had a couple of weeks ago, which many of you will LYAO at me calling it "cold" but when it hits the 30s overnight for two weeks straight, that's considered Damn Cold here! We brought in or covered our plants so most of them survived, but our neighbor's big beautiful angel's trumpet tree is probably dead. It was still flowering in late November but now the flowers & leaves are all brown & shriveled & it looks so sad. I hope it can bounce back.

This is very unusual for this area as well. If the predictions come true, it will be record breaking. The news said it has been 5 years since it has gotten close to this cold.

That is so sh**ty. I'm so sorry. What a jerk. At my company HR would be all over that. It's not okay. I hope your other situation comes through!

OK, I`m gonna be the jerk Smile It is -2F here which is average for winter, but we have record breaking snowfall this winter. We have about 4 ft on the ground right now. DH had to shovel paths in the backyard so the kids dont get stuck Smile

I know it all has to do with what you are used to though. Hope everyone keeps safe and warm. My advice is to cultivate a friend with a wood stove so you can bunk in if the power goes out. Or alternately, get the whole family into one room (or bed) with lots of covers. Your body heat will do a good job keeping a small space warmish if its not too cold.
