It depends on the state you're in. Some states, like Pennsylvania where this occurred, have eliminated all state funding for abortions so poor uninsured women have to pay out-of-pocket or go somewhere like Planned Parenthood that can offer financial help. And some states have laws that restrict insurance companies from paying for an abortion so everyone has to pay out-of-pocket. And some states have put such severe restrictions on abortion clinics that there might not even be one within hours of your home, and it usually require two visits since most states now require a waiting period. All of that for a private medical procedure that should be no one else's business except the woman's and her doctor's. Shame on this country.

As others have said, it would depend on what state you live in. Here, I do not believe insurance would cover an abortion. I know for sure mine does not as it says so right on the list of benefits. Either way, I think the closest place to get an abortion is 100 miles.

ETA - I looked it up. The closest place is 83.5 miles.

That's about $50 just in gas for two round trips on top of the cost of the abortion and the two days off work to make the trip. So many people think they can just legislate abortion away, just take away the safe & accessible part of it, and it will disappear. It doesn't, it just makes desparate women make desparate decisions and THAT is why people like Mr. Gosnell can & do stay in business. That, and you don't have to deal with religious nutjob abortion protestors at illegal clinics.

Huh. Interesting. Well, gathering up all you guys have said it kind of explains why there's Mengele types like this guy able to profit off a woman's misfortune and $hitty circumstances. Backroom abortions with dirty instruments, and the farther along you are the more you pay. It's like a two-tiered health system for the rich/poor, but in a really effed up, backward sort of way.

Yes. Like the ones that Alabama just passed.

Once signed, Alabama's new law would require abortion clinics to meet the standards of an "ambulatory surgical center," Staci Fox, a spokeswoman for Planned Parenthood, has said.

This means the state's five abortion clinics would have to remodel to increase the sizes of rooms and doorways.

Pardon me, but Arkansas' abortion laws make it practically impossible for anyone to get an abortion. States like AK are the ones forcing women into backroom abortions. Who gives a crap about their safety and hygiene regulations when the rules are that prohibitive and downright discriminatory??????? I cannot believe that middle age men making the laws in that state have the audacity, no, the BALLS, to legislate such blatant discrimination. It makes me sick. If anyone is wondering what I'm talking about, just click on the link the article Gloria posted above.eta - Sorry, should have said I was talking about Arkansas, like in the link, NOT Alabama. But, is there a substantive difference?

I've been with 2 friends in the past while they sought abortions and I found them to be in conditions of an ambi-surgi center as it should be. Cleanliness at a medical facility should have a basic cleanliness measure.

Although, it seems like in the article you posted it was more to do about the size of the facility and it appears as an attempt to stop abortion vs. providing clean and safe standards.

I don't know the size measures of the facilities I went to. Seems like an odd thing to push.

Is that due to the obesity problem in Alabama? I don't even get what you are getting at Gloria- other than to say its clear to me you've lost this debate and are grasping at really weird straws!

The doors and hallways have to be large enough for a gurney to fit through. That's the only thing about size I saw.
