That's a little harsh considering she already explained her intention. Everyone reacts to tragic situations differently she wasn't talking about you personally.

Hey, if she is free to speak for all rape victims, I'm surely free to speak for myself, don't you think, Gloria? I find it a little harsh to read about what my sex life is doomed to be like as a rape survivor from someone who has no idea what the heck they are talking about. An apology would have sufficed. Going on to speak to how tragedy changes one forever from her warranted another reply. If you find that harsh, so be it.

Speak for yourself all you want, but you are making assumptions just as she did. You don't know that every rape victim has the same reaction as you did, and you are also making an assumption that she has never been attacked or knows someone who felt that way. So yes, I do find that harsh when she was just making a general statement. I'm sorry that it is a sensitive subject for you but it clearly wasn't meant to be personal.

you think it was a general statement, I think it was a stupid and insulting one. And while I don't know that every rape victim had the same experience I had (and never anywhere said that they did), I DO know that every rape victim did NOT have the horrible fate her statement described.

And me correcting her ignorance is not me being sensitive about a subject. If I stated "No one likes having sex with fat people" , I don't think that people getting offended at the statement would mean that they were "sensitive" about being fat. I think that it would mean that my statement was OUTRAGEOUSLY stupid and insensitive and presumptious and that I never, ever should have made it. See how that works? Not sensitive about the subject. Just correcting the ignorance.

So we disagree. But this isn't about the debate. And she can speak for herself, and I have nothing further to say on this statement.

The teacher began to evacuate the students out a back door, then he and a campus supervisor were able to engage the shooter in conversation and distract him while students evacuated the classroom, the sheriff said. The two adults were able to calm the shooter and convince him to put down the gun.

"[They] did a great job protecting the kids," Chief of Police Ed Whiting said at the conference.

The teacher suffered a minor pellet wound to the head.

Youngblood said a neighbor saw the shooter enter the school armed with the shotgun and called 911, and that Taft police were on the scene in less than sixty seconds.
Aside from it not happening at all, I can't think of a better scenario. A neighbor called 911, police were there within 60 seconds, the students were evacuated and 2 adults calmed the shooter down.

She probably won't say anything because she's too nice, but her statement wasn't stupid. Just because you don't feel that way, doesn't mean you are the normal, you may be the exception. Broad generalizations usually have exceptions and I'm glad you are one of them. If you are going to be insulted by everything anyone who isn't a liberal is going to say on the debate board, why did you come back?

He went in there to kill specific people. If he'd been a crazy person just trying to get his name in the news, he probably would have illegally found a semiautomatic and killed more. Criminals don't care about the law.

Please don't get started with insulting little jabs back and forth again. Just nip it in the bud now. Okay? Thanks.

I agree. And perhaps because the gun didn't allow the kid to shoot off a bagillion rounds in his initial rage, he isn't now a mass murderer and dead of his own hand. Maybe he is just a 16 year old who made a HORRIFIC mistake and is going to be charged with some very serious crimes, but isn't a murderer. Maybe he gets some help, who knows. But surely there is something to be said for not having a high powered weapon in the hands of an upset and irrational kid. Perhaps had had time to see blood, and have regret/fear, before it was all too late and too terrible.

You and Gloria are too sweet.

Please let me reiterate I never meant to offend anyone. Please also do not assume what experiences I have or have not had. In my experience, of the people I know, any one who has been in any of the situations I described have been changed forever. If you can make it through something like that and not be changed, then that is wonderful! Most of the people I know and have talked to do have the school shootings in the back of their mind when they drop their kids off at school for the day. That fear may lesson over time, but will never completely go away. An Innocence has been lost.
