    CVS Pharmacy Wants Workers’ Health Information, or They’ll Pay a Fine - ABC News

    Should companies be able to require their employees to give them their health information?

    I am torn on this issue. DH's work changed its options last year. You could chose a health based plan or you could pay (I think) $90/month more for a plan that was not health based. DH signed up for the health based option. At first I was livid. One of the requirements was a doctors check up that was supposed to be free. (They did end up charging me for the visit because they ran other tests while I was there) I did not want to be forced into going to a doctor so she could yell at me about being over weight. That said, I was diagnosed with PCOS at that appointment and have made some great strides in my health since going there.

    There is so much misinformation on these types of programs and what CVS is doing it is astounding.

    What they are doing is making sure their employees are informed on their health and are going to have a least a routine screening every year. My company does this. It makes sure you are aware of your health and addressing any issues sooner rather than later as it costs a company less to do it that way. If you do it you get extra money towards our premium. They at no time will receive my health info. My doctor or the onsite doctor says yes they had such and such tests done but never finds out the results. It is processed through a 3rd party vendor that will say "Yes, Jessica has done her form" or "no, I have not" Same for CVS.

    This is not because of National Healthcare Reform as companies were doing this for years.
    It is not a Hipaa violation because one no medical information is given to the employer and even if it was you are agreeing to give that information to your employer.

    EXACTLY. The spin the media has put on this is seriously killing me. We have an identical program in place to what CVS has just done. It is not a penalty to those who don't participate it...it is a reward for those who do. This is how companies are required to structure it. So for example, we raised all of our health premiums by $30 per month (each tier), and then if you did the health screenings required, you could get a "premium incentive" of $30 per month which actually enabled you to keep your premiums at last year's rate. It's all symantics, really, but health costs are always going to rise (medical inflation, people seem to keep getting more unhealthy, taking more meds, etc), but this was a REWARD for those who chose to do 2 simple things for the good of their health. The employer has NO access to the data whatsoever, we are only told if the person completed it or not. The media coverage on this is seriously infuriating me, so sensationalized.

    Not to mention the lady on CNN who was arguing against it last night had the most ridiculous arguments ever...her major one was completely wrong (that insurance is not comprised of risk pools whereby the healthy individuals are paying more because of the unhealthy individuals).

    There is not a font big enough to express how much I HATE CVS.

    Personally, I would probably pay the fine. Hell no does anyone need to know whether I test physically healthy or not.

    They won't find that out. They never find out your results. All it says is "Did you see your doctor and have these screenings" Doctor answers yes or no. You get credit for going. That's it.

    I hate CVS too but for different reasons.

    Our insurance had something similar to that this year, but it was a discount instead of a fine. If you saw your doctor and had a physical with some baseline testing you would receive a discount on your insurance. The checkup is free through our insurance, so it was pretty much a no-brainer.

    But it isn't a fine. Everyone has a set premium based on the plan CVS has chosen. Let's say it's 500.00/mo. If you participate in the program they will give you 600.00 in benefit dollars to lower your payroll deductions. It is a reward not a fine.
