    Default hot sauce = abuse?

    http://www.cbc.ca/news/world/story/2...hot-sauce.html

A woman is being charged with child abuse for putting hot sauce in her son's mouth and making him have a cold shower as a punishment.

Is this child abuse? Is this an acceptable punishment?

It certainly feels like abuse to me. I was floored by the amount of comments in the article defending her actions.

Most adults can't handle hot sauce, how is that acceptable punishment for a small child? Absolutely I would classify this as abuse.

I remember her from Dr. Phil. There's more to it than just hot sauce. Yes, she deserves to be charged and punished for what she has done to this poor boy.

Note: The mom in this particular case took it to extremes, and I absolutely think what she did was abuse.

However, I know that it is not unheard of for people to put a drop of hot sauce on the tongue of a child for cussing or lying.

I would never do either of these things, but this to me is about on par with having your mouth washed out with soap. Do you guys also think that is child abuse?

I don't know - calling soap or (a small drop) of hot sauce "abuse" just seems like in a way it is minimizing real abuse that causes lasting damage, if that makes sense.

Again, I would never use the hot sauce (or soap) method because that's most def not how I roll, but when I hear about people doing it, I'm not tempted to call CPS or anything.

Yes, this parent was abusive.....but like Alissa, I don't think that *all* parents who use hot sauce are abusive-- if that makes any sense.

It isn't a strategy we would adopt, but an occasional use of it doesn't necessarily = abuse in my book.

Cold showers? That is also cruel....

How old was the boy? It doesn't totally matter, but I think there is a difference btwn hot saucing a 4 year old and a 16 year old.....still not right, but different IMO.

Yes, I think forcing a kid to consume soap is abuse (hello?!? it isn't meant to be consumed!!!). The hot sauce I'm torn on. It doesn't sit right with my for some reason but I'm not sure what would classify it as abuse. I have spanked my children and don't consider that to be abusive (though I know some do) so I'm just not sure about the hot sauce.

Who says this won't cause lasting damage? What if these children grow up with a fear of anything hot and spicy? If you hit a person long enough, any time you raise a hand they're going to flinch. If you "hot sauce" a person long enough, any time you see a bottle of tabasco they're going to flinch.

Soap is not meant to be consumed. Hot sauce is not meant to punish children, it's meant to spice up dishes.
