How do we feel about Oprah? (fluff)

Just curious. So, spill it....Love her, hate her, or just meh? She was here in town yesterday and gave a talk or whatever she does to a sold out crowd.

I'm in the "meh" group. I know she's worked very hard to get where she is, but I don't think she is as important as she thinks she is.

I think she has the media in her hand, and a great majority of her viewers are enthralled with her. I think she is super smart.. smarter than me in business to take something she loved and was good at and make millions. I disagree with her the majority of the time, but I don't hate her. But I do not watch nor care to. I think she is great at giving to get ;).. without people knowing it.

And I hate that she called Obama "the One" sounds so wrong, from a Christian Standpoint.

I've never watched her show. I do know that she has achieved amazing success and overcome some huge obstacles, which is always something to celebrate. I can say that I find it incredibly arrogant that she is on the cover of her own magazine every month (I see it in the grocery store aisles and it confounds me?). Is it just me or is that super duper weird?

I think that she has accomplished great things in life and is a good person. I am not going to agree with her 100% on everything, but I do not know anyone that I agree with 100% on everything.

I think I'm just tired of her. Okay, made your billions, done great stuff for charities, donated a crap ton of money and all that, but really? $500 to see her in person? Her 'retirement' from the show was a fake, IMO. She still interviews all these people, but in private instead of infront of a studio audience. I don't really see the difference. She has her magazine, channel, etc. etc. etc. I think she thinks she's smarter and more savvy than she really is. I'd rather watch Ellen.

When I take a step back, I have a tremendous amount of admiration for what she has accomplished. Against all odds, she built an empire, and I do think that she has used that empire to do some very good things, and that somewhere in her heart, she really does want to do good in the world, and tries to do that as part of her MO.

That said, I don't watch her, I don't really share many of her opinions, and I find the Cult of Oprah really really annoying. I loved when she was on 30 Rock and they were making fun of the way she tells people to like things. (Sweater capes!) I have no interest in her opinions.

It's like this: I love that she started a book club and encouraged people to care about reading; I hated that she would endorse a book and it would sell gajillions based only on her say-so, and I deliberately avoided buying editions of books with the Oprah's Book Club stamp on them. I found it annoying.

I still admire her for her achievements, and I also think she was kickass in The Color Purple.

I don't think I've ever watched her show. Nothing personal, I'm just not into talk shows. Having said that, my over all impression of her is positive. She seems like a smart lady who has worked hard and tries to do good in the world. That's admirable. LOL Melissa, I never really gave much thought to her being on the cover of O magazine every month (which I've also never read.) That's really funny, now that you mention it. LOL
