UC Berkeley Student Government Bans Term ‘Illegal Immigrant’
Should the term be banned? Is it derogatory?
I don't know if it should be banned because honestly it's much better than saying "illegal alien." I do know people who like to suspect anyone with an accent as an "illegal immigrant" though. Idiots.
People get very hung up on words. None of those words are derogatory or racist. TREATING people as less than human is the issue, not using words that describe their legal status. I am a legal immigrant, myself....someone who is living here without the status to do so is an illegal immigrant, and that's that. How you then choose to treat them is the issue. It's not a race or a color thing, there are plenty of white illegal immigrants! You can be a Canadian illegal immigrant! (Although no one would know until you asked for vinegar for your french fries.) Yeesh.
I don't have any problem with it. Students have decided how other students will refer to other students. There are an estimated 900 students in the country illegally who are currently enrolled in the 10-campus, University of California system, according to UC officials. These students live in “fear” because former Homeland Security secretary Janet Napolitano is now president of the UC system, according to the resolution, which aims to “create a safe campus environment for all students.”
“The ‘I’ word is legally inaccurate since being out of status is a civil rather than criminal infraction,” states the resolution, which notes some journalists have stopped using the term.
I hate fries without it! If I leave the general New Bedford area they will bring malt vinegar....VOM!
I also put white vinegar on my clam cakes (and if you have never had a clam cake...get yourself to Mass. PRONTO)
