JFK conspiracy theories
Friday marks the 50th anniversary of the assassination of President John Kennedy. A recent Gallup poll shows that 59% of Americans still believe that there was a conspiracy to kill JFK, and that only 24% of Americans believe that Oswald was the lone gunman that the Warren Commission determined him to be. That amazes me. Are you a conspiracy theorist or a lone gunman believer? Why?
I'm a lone gunman believer. I don't doubt that there probably was a conspiracy theory (or many) to kill JFK but I think they were beaten by the punch by a reckless Castro devotee. Here's a good article:
John F. Kennedy conspiracy theories debunked: Why the magic bullet and grassy knoll don’t make sense.
If it happened today, I think people would be more inclined to believe it was a lone gunman - an act of terrorism by a man who defected the Soviet Union.
A conspiracy theory doesn't really make sense to me. But I loved the Seinfeld episode with "The Magic Loogie Theory"!
To quote HRC, What difference does it make? He is dead now, and how he died is not really relevant. However, I am sure it would make a good movie or book plot.
I believe there is more to the story then the Warren Commision found, or more then what we are allowed to hear. But I also dont think that I consider myself a conspiracy theorist on this issue.
Lisa, you do know that you can read the entire Warren Commission report?

I was amazed by the breakdown in generations on that poll. I would think the older generation, who were adults at the time & made their decision in the emotional moment & have just never been swayed by anything, would be more likely to believe in conspiracy theories. But the younger generation has a higher percentage of conspiracy theorists -- 55% for the older folks compared to 61% of the younger ones. That's surprising to me since so many of us in the younger generation have been able to watch the actual unedited video, and various re-creations and computer simulations, etc. over the years. My mom refuses to watch anything to do with his death for fear of seeing the video, saying she was traumatized enough by just hearing that he was killed & seeing Jackie Kennedy's blood-stained dress when LBJ was sworn in.
Not sure how long this will be "our latest story #3" but here's a direct link to the Gallup survey:
New poll finds that belief in JFK assassination conspiracy still strong, but slipping slightly | Associated Press GfK Poll
We dissected the Warren report in a poli sci class in college, so I have read the whole thing. I just believe that there is more then what was put in the report. Whether it was with held for security reasons or whatever.
I'm never one for a conspiracy theory (or theories). Lone gunman for me.
I do like to discuss theories though. I just never actually go along with them.
Excellent NOVA on why the lone gunman theory is scientifically sound

I love NOVA!
The biggest question for me is how it was so easy for Jack Ruby to kill Lee Harvey Oswald. That is what makes me think there was a conspiracy, and it was all part of some larger plan.
But I don't consider myself a conspiracy theorist.
Laurie, that has always been a nagging doubt in my head too, as well as not thinking that Oswald was not intelligent enough to pull this off without some input from others. But I do think that on the day of the shooting it was a lone gunman.
