So I guess dodge ball is out?

Well, if the goal of dodge ball is to physically harm someone, then yeah. I didn't know the sole purpose of gator balls was to inflict violence on someone else though.

Well pretty much the same exact rules apply in the shooting games my kids play. You hit someone and they are out until the game starts over. The purpose of the shooting games they play aren't to inflict violence or physically harm someone else either.

What is the purpose of a gun? Why are they manufactured? For what reason? Please, explain. I don't care about some gun sitting in a bedside table for self defence that, incidentially, has never been fired. That is not what I am talking about. Why is that gun there?

To shoot things with. Shooting things is fun. Have you never gone to an arcade where they have targets setup where you can shoot things and the lights go off?

You know that shooting is an olympic sport right?

What do you think, bonita? While water guns of all types are banned at my club (YAY!) do you really think I do drive by's of local pools and call CPS when I see children playing with water guns?

What is the purpose of shooting things? What is the desired end result from shooting someone? And to that second sentence, shooting WHAT is fun?

It was an honest question. Most of this debate has been about toy guns, not real guns. So while I can not fathom turning someone into CPS for letting someone play with a toy gun, it appeared to me that that is what you were saying. No one here was talking about a 5 year old playing with a real gun, only a toy gun or a BB gun. I was clarifying what do you define as a gun in this situation?

I would never shoot someone so I wouldn't know the desired result. The purpose of shooting things is to hit the target. Whatever you are shooting at. We have used coke cans a lot. Those are fun because sometimes they fly up into the air.

The poll also shows that most gun owners use their guns for each of these three purposes: crime protection (67%), target shooting (66%), and hunting (58%).

Should these all be illegal for child's play?

What about the cases where children are being suspended (or threatened with suspension) for such "play" -- even with fingers or legos:

White Marsh Elementary first-graders suspended for using fingers as guns while playing

Hyannis 5-Year-Old Threatened With Suspension For Making Gun Out Of Legos

(or in this case -- merely talking about it landed this 5 yr old with "making terrorist threat"

Parents of girl suspended from Pennsylvania elementary school for talking about soap bubble toy gun want her record cleared

Kim, we personally don't have any of those guns. I'm also against the whole idea of suspending first graders. A little redirection and some talking to should really be enough to nip that crap in the bud ~ suspending a baby (and yes, I consider 6 year olds and 5 year olds to pretty much be babies) is ridiculous. That said, if they don't get back up from the parents, because, say, the parents are pro gun play or even arm their children with real BB Guns, the administrators may have an uphill battle to fight and suspension may be their only recourse.
