Suicides by gun went down 65 percent, and robberies at gunpoint also dropped significantly. In the decade before the Port Arthur massacre, there were 11 mass shootings in Australia; since then, with the new gun control laws in place, there hasn’t been one shooting spree.
Australia's gun ownership was completely different than what we have in the U.S. and could never be used as an example of what could happen in the U.S.

The rumor that snopes is disputing is the rumor that Australian gun crime is UP since the ban. I can't quote from snopes for some reason, but just about the only thing that supports your anti-gun control views is that they say you can't really compare AUS with USA since in AUS the people that can own guns was already restricted. However, they do state that actually, the rate of gun homocides dipped after the ban, which is interesting when you consider that only certain people (supposedly law abiding gun owners with a demostrable "need" for a gun) had access to them. That says to me that even people who seem to be able to show an actual "need" for a gun can't entirely be trusted to be responsible for them, since the gun violence should have already been at a minimum but dropped further after the ban. Interesting.

If you research that information you will find that though homicides dipped after the ban, so did homicides in the U.S. without a ban. So it doesn't necessarily correlate.
