Microwave?

Do you use a microwave? Would you consider giving it up? Why or why not?

We use our microwave very rarely, I think only a few times a week. I dont know if I would get rid of it, but I could definitely use a smaller one.

I do use my microwave often. I do not however, stand directly in front of it while using it.

I use my microwave all the time, and I am not concerned Smile I do agree that food cooked in it doesnt taste as good (I refuse to microwave coffee, it is nasty), but I rarely use it to 'cook' food. More often to defrost frozen meat or reheat already cooked meals. I am a horrible planner, so I dont know where I would be without my microwave....we would probably eat a lot more toast and egg dinners Smile

ETA: I wanted to add though, that I have friends who dont own a microwave. They lived in a rental for about 6 months that didnt have one, and just found that once they got used to not having it, they didnt miss it. They did renovate their kitchen recently without a 'spot' for a microwave, and I think that was a very poor choice as people looking to buy are going likely going to want to add one.

We do not have one.. haven't for 16 years thought I would miss it.. I don't.. I learned how to cook proportioned to my family. How to reheat in the oven... To thaw meat I put in a ziploc and put it into a HOT sink full of water, if I have not pulled out the day before. If I had one I would use to to heat up a flax seed warmer.. other than that I have never considered buying one... cept maybe a a little while when the kiddos were little as my two were 13 months apart.. and I could have used something much quicker.. heck I didn't even own a crockpot!

Oh the why - when we moved into our little house in the country we never bought one.. that was the start.. then I researched it and found it actually changes the food and thought what is the point.. Now we moved three years later but still live in a small house.. but microwaved food tastes wrong.. it is chewy and just gross imo.. I can't take it.. I have a teapot for tea, I have a toaster, and a double oven with the convection oven option on the bottom.. and a crockpot.. I do not have a need for it.. and it would be one more thing to make me unhealthy and I have enough chronic illnesses I do not want to worry about long term effects.

I didn't know anyone used a microwave to actually COOK food. Like, people put a chicken in there or something?

I would definitely miss our microwave. With our schedule, I like to be able to cook larger meals that can then be reheated quickly when we've got a lot going on in the evenings. I've never used it to actually cook meat, though - it's either for the random tv dinners or heating up previous meals.

I have 2 microwaves so I can use them both at the same time. When I moved into this house there was a built in microwave and I already had one so I just kept both of them. I don't use it for anything you would bake or to cook meat because it doesn't do well for those things. But things that are boiled on the stovetop like rice or potatoes I use the microwave for. I can't tell the difference in taste and I think it is much easier to put it in the microwave and set the time than to set it on the stove and wait for it to boil and worry about it burning.

I do not know anyone that uses the microwave to cook entire meals. I use my microwave to thaw out meat and to eat up water and also frozen vegetables.

I have never owned a microwave. We had a roommate for a while who brought one with him, but I didn't use it much and I didn't miss it enough to buy one after he left. The only times I miss having a microwave are for warming up Chinese food (that's the only thing that doesn't heat up well in an oven or skillet) and when I want a baked potato in the heat of summer. I don't eat meat so no need to thaw out chunks of that, and we try to eat as fresh as possible with other things. And I am concerned about how the microwaves change food, but not enough to not use the one at work to warm up leftover chow fun!

Okay, phew.

We have a microwave too and I use it for a lot of simple things, but not for actual cooking. I have softening butter for baking down to a science for those days when I forget to take it out in advance.

I am sure it is an old wives tale, but my mother used to always say not to stand in front of it because of the radiation. I also have read not to stand in front of a microwave if you are pregnant. I do not know if there is any basis at all, but it never hurts anything to step out of the way.

Ohh okay I wasn't even thinking about the radiation. There's radiation all around us everyday, especially our cell phones... I guess I just don't think about it since there's no way to get away from it. Even bananas have a minuscule amount of radiation Smile

I do know people that cook microwave meals.. is that food? some of the meals especially the organic ones you have to cook for quite a long time.. also skinless boneless chicken breast, chicken patties, vegetarian burger patties, sausages, etc for meat.

So yes.. people put a chicken in there... lol.. sorry just sounded a bit snarky and rude on this end,,, maybe you didn't mean it that way?.. of course they do not put a whole chix in microwave..

We have a small microwave and we used it occasionally. We never cook anything in it. I think i can list the things we use it for on one hand

Reheating a cup of coffee
Reheating some leftovers. Things like pizza i don't reheat in the microwave oven because I think it turns out much better reheated in the regular oven. Something like pasta casserole, i definitely do in the microwave.
Speeding up the process of softening butter or melting it
Reheating refrigerated spaghetti sauce, just to take the chill out of it.

I really think thats it.

Does over use of the microwave concern me? I don't know...i think kind of, but I don't really feel like there is definitive proof that its going to kill anyone, i'm going more on my gut than anything else that its just something I'd like to avoid doing a lot.

I don't care for the way the blog post was written. I wouldn't take advice from that woman LOL

Kind of OT, but has anyone tried the method of baking boiled eggs in the oven instead of boiling them? It has been all over FB and I was going to try it for Easter eggs this year but I was just curious if anyone else has tried it yet.

No but I had friends that did and they exploded.
I do mine boiled.
Poke holes in the egg on the flatter end
Put in the water.. cold.
Bring to a hard Boil.
Turn to low and cook 18 minutes
Dump out hot water and put in cold water.

These make the easiest shelling eggs I have found.

We did eggs in the oven one year. It can brown eggs a little bit, not making them as good for Easter decorating.
