Can you cite this law? I did a search and couldn't find it, in fact the only thing I could find is rental voucher program that says they don't HAVE to, not that they can't, and then it is age 8 not 5.
(a) Household members of the opposite sex, excepting husband and wife (or those in a similar living arrangement), do not have to share a bedroom, provided that children of the opposite sex under the age of eight shall share a bedroom and provided that other household members of the opposite sex may elect to share a bedroom.
I have to agree, that is a crazy law as well as a massive invasion of privacy. Also not a law that's enforceable under normal circumstances OR one I'd ever consider obeying if it was an issue. (My kids have their own bedrooms now anyway.)
I have heard of those kind of rules in the case where you are going to foster or adopt through the state (that you must make separate bedrooms available for opposite sex children over a certain age), but I don't think they exist as a law for just the average person. That would be crazy for the state to dictate that.
I just got home from work and I'll have to look it up. I never did. It is just something that is known. Not always enforced but it is there. Like...if you are investigated for something and they find that....charges kind of thing.
I honestly couldn't . Ifind anything either. Might be one of those things everyone thinks exists and doesn't..I knew of it, our realtor mentioned it to us etc. But since I can't support it I take it back.
But it still doesn't change 1 bedroom rents are not much cheaper than 2. We had a 1 bedroom for 800/mo 10 years ago ( a steal!). Can't imagine affording that on minimum wage..and I lived no where near Boston.
