In Canada every family, no matter their income or status, receives the UCCB (Universal Child Care Benefit) for each child until age 6. It is $100 per month per child. There is no rule, however, on how that benefit should be applied. Some lower income people and those on social assistance AND those families with higher income probably use it for dipes, clothing, or even non-essentials (like lottery tickets, beer, whatever, and some families who have a stay-at-home parent probably use that benefit for things other than child care, even though the benefit is designed to give families a break in their child care expenses. We choose to put that money into an account we opened for the kids and then decide what to do with it later, so we're not technically using it for their child care expense (currently $1310 per month). Am I defrauding the govt of the purpose of the benefit?
