If you just don't like me, thats a different issue and one that my apologies cannot solve. However, I would ask you to either state your problem or to knock off the snark.
I am not trying to be snarky either. I didn't think you were talking about me, but I did think you were talking about someone else on this board.

Again, I'm not being snarky, I'm confused about this name calling as it relates to opinions/stances on a given issue.
I thought this was an honest question, and I was trying to help you to see what others on this board might take as offensive, as I thought maybe you just don't realize how those types of comment sound. I wasn't trying to pile on, and I apologize because I should have just waited to let Alissa answer because it isn't my place.

Im my defense, let me explain what I mean. I have never seen a wealthy person get all bent over the buck on the lotto. In my experience on this board and in these debates the people who are always most ugly about "the dumb poor" are the ones who may only be a step or two away from assistance themselves. In other words, they interact (or claim to) with these people blinging out their welfare bucks. I just have ZERO experience with that, or seeing that, so I can't conjure up the anger that others may be able to. When I say that they get high and mighty I mean that they seem to have a really vested feeling of "THEIR TAX DOLLARS" going to help these people. And I think that an issue of power, or superiority, or simple jealousy (you are getting away with it and I'm not and you have things I want even though I'm doing everything RIGHT!!!!". I get that, but I do call those feelings "issues". Because when we look at the facts, most people don't abuse the system. MOST people need it.

So, that was what I was trying to say. I am often typing on my phone or this past 5 days have been at the hospital with my son, so I've been brief and perhaps offensive if I didn't explain the entirety of what I meant. I apologize.

The good news is that after a routine surgery turned not routine and 5 scary days, my 2 year old and I are home. Thank god!

91% of all benefit dollars assist our old folks, our disabled citizens, dependent children and members of the working poor who are paid such low salaries that they require a little help to thrive (i.e., to not starve). The working poor. You know, the people who do the jobs that people like you probably think they are too good to do. There are plenty of people in this country who are salaried workers and work well over 40 hours but still qualify for benefits because they are still considered low income. They probably carefully budget THEIR money (yes, they still receive wages, it's not YOUR tax dollars bankrolling their entire groovy lifestyle) and I think they deserve to have a drink every now and then, or have a nice dinner out, or (GASP) even buy a lottery ticket.

    ITA!

And my bolded, poverty level for a family of 4 is 60K. It will be YEARS before i see that. Am i gonna go back to school? You betcha. But, i'm not going to let my family suffer because my DH gets diddly from SSDI monthly and we have bills to pay. I'm still waiting on unemployment (this has been since OCT) to get there damn act together.

Some of us have been in situations where we actually see these people that are abusing the system day after day. My first job out of college was a social service caseworker. For 3 years I worked with these people every day to see if they were eligible for benefits for Food stamps and AFDC checks as they were called at that time. Sure there were people that needed temporary help and I had no problem with those people getting benefits. But there were also plenty of people who had been on the system for years and knew just how to work the system. Just because you haven't been exposed to these people doesn't mean they don't exist. There is an entitlement attitude from some of these people that the government OWES them something. Like this woman.

No doubt. But they are a minority and it is unfair to generalize all people on assistance based on a minority. Some rich people cheat on their taxes and give nothing to charity. It is unfair to judge all wealthy people as heartless and selfish.

And thanks guys, I'm so glad we are home too and appreciate your well wishes.

I don't generalize everyone based on this. I have seen both types of people. But I would tend to put people who are buying lottery tickets or buying beer while on assistance in the category of abusing the system. There is no way that I would be gambling or buying beer at the same time as I couldn't afford to feed my own children.
