THIS is the actual statement one of those sheriffs who was grossly misrepresented in Glorias slanderous little "article" actually made.

That is what it means to serve, Lillie. To put the laws of the US Government before your own agenda. To follow your oath. To man up and respect and honor the oath that you made, even if it may rub against your personal agenda or desire concerning an issue, and to do it with INTEGRITY.

This is what our gun loving Sheriff's should be doing. Not writing bratty and traitorous letters to the press for some foot stomping childish attention. I hope any who do are fired and charged with impeding justice if they do in fact fail to carry out the law.

The letters aren't really in the National news, did you see most of the sites Gloria quoted from? Fringe right wing wacko ones. Not to mention if you read in the comments many of the sherrifs themselves are speaking up and being quite clear that they themselves made NO such comment


If I wasn't running out to work out I'd love to do more research into how much of these "news" stories from these biased stories have much merit to them.

Yes, both positions are paid by the US citizens. One is paid for by federal money and you apply like a normal job. The other is paid for by the city or county/parish and you get elected. Elected positions are very very different than a federal job you apply for. There are only two civilians who can fire me and the second one would actually have to hand me over to someone military and tell them to fire me. Elected positions vary by area, but it's a lot easier for them to get fired.

If you think I'm alone, then you are talking the crazy talk. Military members are much much more protective of their gun rights than anyone else I know (from personal experience) including people who hunt and those who live in bad neighborhoods. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to interpret the second amendment. It's pretty ****ing clear. ;) The Constitution comes before any of the others in our oath.

Maybe you should stop cursing at me because you sound really trashy. I won't debate anymore with you. This is the second time you have used the F word towards me and I find your language unacceptable. This is a fun debate board, and either you take it too seriously, or you just have no idea how normal adults speak to one another. Over and out, Lillie. If I sell my car to a private individual, I would have to check to see if they had a valid license in order for them to drive my car. While I am still the RO I have to carry insurance on it which wouldn't necessarily cover an unlicensed driver.

I agree that nobody should cussing at anyone else on the debate board. I'll let Missy answer for herself, but my vote is that if you are directing your cussing AT someone, that goes beyond a little bit of colorful debate.

To get back to the debate, Lillie, I have 2 responses.

First of all, I'm not sure what would be unconstitutional about background checks and registration for guns. You'll need to explain how the Second Amendment prohibits that, because I don't see anything about that in the text. If your argument is that literally everyone is guaranteed the right to own a gun, do you support known criminals being able to buy guns openly and legally? Children? I mean, I think that most people agree that *some* limits are sensible, but the Second Amendment doesn't really go into that. So if you could please explain exactly what you mean about the "unconstitutionality" of it, I would like to hear more.

The second point is that I agree that it is not up to individual police forces to interpret the "constitutionality" of given laws. There is nothing in the Constitution that expressly talks about, for example, child pornography. I would not support police officers taking it upon themselves to decide that laws against child porn violate the First Amendment (freedom of expression) and that they simply won't be enforced. If such a thing were to happen, even if those police officers' direct bosses also took such a view, I would hope that the people higher up in the force would show better sense and remove them.

No, I was talking about what most of the Sheriff's letters were about. Taking guns away from people. I don't have a problem with background checks or registering new gun purchases.

My integrity is more important than my job. If someone told me to take away someone's rights just because someone above told them to, then I'd lose my job (and in my case go to jail). But that's only if they have enough military to actually do anything. If someone decides the military is the way to get assault rifles away from citizens, then they need to plan to enlist/commission a *lot* of liberals because I can almost guarantee there won't be enough of the current military left to guard the ones locked up let alone actually finish the job. That goes for cops too, I'm guessing. I'm not taking a gun away from anyone unless they've got it pointed at someone.

As I shared, I really love reading the debates and wish that I could participate more often. I appreciate hearing from *both* sides of a topic, even if I may disagree. This would be a completely boring place if all of you shared the same points of view. I find this board a space that both challenges me to consider my positions on various issues as well as provides me with food for thought. I know that EVERYONE here is capable of presenting their thoughts while refraining from violating the terms outlined. Please keep those in mind or take a break if needed until you can.
