Oatmeal (fluffy!)

Oatmeal? What do you think? Delicious and nutritious? Or just gross and pasty?

Does how you make it matter... package vs real oats or microwave vs stove top?

What is the best way to spruce it up?

We eat Oatmeal for breakfast 4 or 5 days a week in the winter! YES, like anything, how you make it matters. That instant or prepackaged stuff is nothing but sugar and, like, oat flakes or something.

We make whole oats, add ground flax, raisins, cinnamon and a tiny bit of vanilla extract. I top mine with almonds and the kids with a little bit of fage, occasionally I throw in a few bananas or apples in winter. Love it.

Paste.

My kids like it, my dad likes it, to me it tastes like paste. By the time I add enough sugar to eat it, there's no point. PASTE!

We love oatmeal and eat it all of the time. Like Melis, not the instant but the cook on the stove, takes some time kind of oatmeal.

I also have a good recipe for baked oatmeal that is steel cut oats soaked overnight and then baked with eggs and cinnamon and brown sugar.....yum-O!

Made right, I don't find it pastey at all. Thick, but not pastey.

The only one in our household who doesn't like oatmeal is DH. He said that it's because they ate it all.of.the.time. for breakfast growing up. But we definitely make it over the stove and add brown sugar and flax. Delicious! I'll have to try almonds and vanilla because I'm a huge fan of both. I'm picky on texture, but if made right, I agree the oatmeal is not pasty at all.

What is fage?

I like Quaker Oats - the kind you make on the stove. I practically grew up on it - with a little brown sugar and cinnamon and some cold milk to cool it down since it was so flippin' hot. My kids love oatmeal too. My mom used to put hot milk on cereal too - like Shredded Wheat biscuits (the big huge ones you'd have to break in half to make fit in your bowl). I liked that, and Cream of Wheat. My kids so far aren't big fans of Cream of Wheat.

My ds LOVES the big shredded wheat... we call it "big bales of hay" LOL Run hot water over them, drain, add brown sugar and milk... he can eat 3 or 4 in a sitting. Strange child! Wink

I guess I'd call porridge gross and nutritious LOL

I grew up with the Quaker Oats... we'd put a heaping amount of brown sugar on top and let it melt like "candy" and then add milk. Used to like the instant oatmeal as a kid too. I lost a taste for the instant stuff ages ago... but the regular porridge, I was eating it pretty much every day while EP'ing for 3.5 months for my ds... that was 6+ years ago and now I can't stomach the stuff *shudder* My kids and dh love it though. I mix up a big batch of dry mix (quick oats/sugar/cinnamon/nutmeg/dried fruit) and leave it in the pantry... they just have to scoop out 1/2 cup, add 1 cup of water, and nuke it for 2 minutes and a yummy breakfast for them Smile

Cream of Wheat once a once in awhile thing as a kid... haven't had it in years so don't know if I could eat it now or not. My dad used to like Red River Cereal... we always said it looked like birdseed LOL

Ah, thanks! I'm guessing it's a brand? We make our own greek yogurt so I'm not familiar with what's out there.

I grew up on Malt O Meal and Cream of Wheat... loved those as well, but don't eat it now nearly as often as oatmeal. My younger kids aren't huge fans of them.

Oatmeal? What do you think? Delicious and nutritious? Or just gross and pasty? Delicious and nutritious. Only real oatmeal though. None of that quick cooking stuff from the packets with weird fake "fruit" in it. You don't even have to cook the real stuff on the stove. It cooks in several minutes in the microwave as well. I am actually not sure why the packets are seen as more convenient. They are pasty.

Does how you make it matter... package vs real oats or microwave vs stove top? Real oats all the way. Stove top vs. microwave doesn't make a ton of difference. The difference is in the whole oats rather than that pulverized stuff.

What is the best way to spruce it up? My kids love any number of combinations of frozen fruit, yogurt, cinnamon, nutmeg, vanilla, raisins, walnuts, almonds, etc. Maple syrup (the real stuff) for a special treat.

Yummy, but I have to be in the mood.

I sprinkle a little brown sugar on mine. I put a touch of honey on DS's

I also like Grape Nuts with hot milk on it.....mostly when I'm preggers. I think my body likes the iron. Smile Two of our kids love it, too.

Does the hot milk soften it enough so it doesn't feel like your teeth are going to break? While I like the taste of Grape Nuts I find them too crunchy.

Dh and I eat oatmeal most days for breakfast, but I can't get the kids to like it (well, the older ones.... the baby likes it).

We do ours with real oats in the microwave, since I'm usually only making one bowl. I would do it on the stove if I was making a whole bunch. I like a little brown sugar and milk.

We buy a giant 50lb sack of oats for $20 twice a year. How is that for eating healthy and cheap? Wink

I love oatmeal on the stovetop..especially with wild blueberries (the small ones not the big fat ones). I can eat a package of it in a pinch. But they are like two completely different foods.

Instant oatmeal has a high glycemic index and is not as good for you as slow cook oats.

Anybody ever eat the puffed wheat from the enormous bag? It was like the most generic no-name cereal ever. It was also the only cereal I had to put sugar on as a kid.

I think the only time I had ever eaten puffed wheat is when my mom made it into "puffed wheat squares"... Yummy!

I guess my taste buds are weird, because I actually like instant oatmeal better. NOT the flavored kind, though, the plain, and I make mine with 2/3 cup milk instead of water, then add raisins and almonds and a little all-natural stevia. YUM. I don't eat oatmeal all the time, though, I have to be in the mood for it.

I actually would prefer the old-fashioned oats since they're better for you, but I can never seem to get the consistency right and they wind up too "chewy" for my taste. Maybe I don't cook them long enough? And if I try to cook them in the microwave (which I prefer), they boil over and make a big mess, so I'd rather just use a packet of instant. So easy to just pour the packet in the bowl, add 2/3 cup milk, then throw it in the microwave for 2 minutes.

If I may answer the question about Grape Nuts, I've had them hot and yes, it softens them Smile

I love oatmeal. I used to eat it cold every morning. As an adult though, I prefer it hot. Love me some steel cut, too. Flake oats just aren't the same as steel cut. We add fruit, milk, flax seed etc. And I fully admit to plenty of brown sugar or maple syrup!

Also a fan of Red River and Cream of Wheat. The hot cereals are hearty and warm and great for us colder climate gals.

Yeah, I probably wouldn't eat much oatmeal if I lived in Florida or Texas. I don't eat it in the summer much - mostly a winter thing!

You need a really big bowl to cook it in the microwave!

Love oatmeal, with a little brown sugar and milk. I like the oatmeal on the stove better than instant but I'll take either!

I love love love oatmeal!! I eat it any time of year. I make mine on the stovetop, because I think it tastes better, and I put milk and tons of sugar (well, Splenda to save on the calories lol) in it so that it's super sweet!

I love porridge. Real oats either cooked on the stove or microwave the topped with a sprinkle of sugar, dash of milk and a small amount of butter, yum.

I can chime in the oatmeal lover's club! I prefer when I have time to make them myself with jam or fruit but I can be satisfied with the pre-packaged too!

My DS#2 has this gross medicine he takes and sometimes the only way I can get him to take it is mixed in a bowl of yummy peaches and cream oatmeal! Yay for oatmeal!!!

(Oh, I like other hot breakfast "cereals" too like porridge and cream of wheat. Perfect for chilly mornings - or evenings, whatever!)

I like oatmeal okay, but I have to be in the mood for something sweet (mostly I am not a big "sweet" person, especially in the morning for some reason.)

DH and T both LOVE oatmeal for breakfast. Has to be steel cut, cooked on the stove top, then topped with a bit of milk, brown sugar, reg sugar, and raisins or other dried fruits. I have to admit, it's pretty tasty, when I'm in the mood for it. The texture of steel cut oats is waaaaay better than the texture of regular and especially instant oatmeal. Instant oatmeal is the blech, although I liked it as a kid.

The other thing that DH and T are totally crazy about is Chocolate Cream of Wheat. Does anyone else ever do this? DH will cook up a pot of cream of wheat, and at some point add cocoa and sugar, and then top with milk when it is time to serve. Also yummy when I'm in the mood for it.

Yummy! I like to add grains, dried fruit and then a spoon of brown sugar on top. So good. I can't stand the instant stuff.
