OT - Afghanistan

I just found out that a good friend of DH, someone that we both knew well growing up and is very close to DH's family, just died in Afghanistan. He was killed by a suicide bomber. DH's family is all very devastated.

Sorry, I know it is not really a debate, I just needed to express it somewhere.

I'm sorry they must be going through a lot. My heart goes out to them, my son just left yesterday to go back for a second time. He will be gone 6 months. It is very hard not to worry with everything that is going on in that area of the world right now.

Thank you.

Does anyone know how long before the funeral normally is. I don't want to be insensitive by asking, but it would help me be able to plan better if I knew.

I can't really say for sure because I am sure it varies, but it will probably be at least a week or so. A young man from our church was killed last year and it took about a week for his body to be shipped home. Our church coordinated for people to line up along the highway with flags when his casket was picked up from the airport.

Bonita, I am so very sorry to hear of this loss. I will be offering my thoughts and prayers for the family (and friends.)

To answer your question, as Gloria shared it varies. Unfortunately, in some cases there is a delay in shipment of the remains back to the States. I know that they try to do this as quickly as possible now. Sad Then, once in the states, many times there can be another 3 - 7 days (or more) before the release to the family. It can make it very difficult to plan -- and honestly prolongs the anguish for the family/friends as the process of closure can't begin. Sad The longest that I believe we have dealt with from the time of being informed until date of burial was about 5 weeks; shortest about 8 or 10 days.

Gloria, I will be keeping your son in my thoughts and prayers. That is an incredibly sweet picture with his little one.
