    Default OT Question - Blackface

I am admitting my ignorance. I was looking through the news to see which mainstream media outlets carried a story I was looking for (I first saw it on Fox, but wanted to see if anyone else had picked it up). Every single news website had a variation of this story.

I tried Googling it, but could not get a clear picture. What is blackface? Is it any makeup that darkens your skin? I truly have never heard the term before and am trying to understand why it is such a big story (I mean front page of everything).

Blackface - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Blackface is a form of theatrical makeup used in minstrel shows, and later vaudeville, in which performers create a stereotyped caricature of a black person. The practice gained popularity during the 19th century and contributed to the proliferation of stereotypes such as the "happy-go-lucky darky on the plantation" or the "dandified coon".[1]
