Let’s try something just for fun. Anyone who is interested is welcome to join us in a Debate Challenge. Every now and then you will see a thread with “Debate Challenge” in the title. When you see that, it is a formal debate with assigned teams. There will never be more than one Debate Challenge on the board at any given time. The Debate Challenge will have a specific end date/time and then a different Debate Challenge will be launched. No matter what your true opinion is on the subject up for debate, you MUST debate the position of your team.
Those known to be debating the incorrect position will have their posts replaced with graphics supporting their actually team’s stance. For the first Debate Challenge, the teams will be decided by the first letter of your screen name. Those in the (A-L) will be on the ‘pro’ side of the debate. Those in the (M-Z) will be on the ‘con.’ We’ll repeat this on the thread when the actual debate begins. Debaters can join in at any time in an open Debate Challenge. We may decide to try some with an advanced sign up so teams may be drawn. In those situations any debaters that wish to join once the debate has begun will need to contact a mod so their position can be drawn.
The debate topics will range from the light and humorous to the deep and serious. We will do our best to steer clear of any topics that correlate with religious, cultural or moral beliefs. Again, this is just for fun and for those with an interest. This format is more like the debate experience some may have had in school when you found yourself arguing a position no matter your personal view. Aside from the fact a lot can be learned from arguing a position you may normally disagree with, this format will also create an opportunity for some who may traditionally be on opposite sides of debates to be on the same team.
Again, this is for fun. The rest of the GDB will run as usual. Individuals with ideas for the Debate Challenge are welcome to submit them to a member of the mod team. We’ll keep this going for as long as there appears to be interest in participating.
