Agreed. Our community has been absolutely wonderful in terms of offering free activities for kids, places to charge up, etc. Also here in NYC there are food trucks heading to areas without power to give away free lunches. (The food truck business is big here.)

That's awful about the power being out for so long, but wonderful to hear all of the stories of communities pulling together.

That is some serious power overload in that picture!

It's still really nuts here. My husband waited in line for an hour today to get gas, which isn't actually that bad compared to others.

I'm running out of "chin up"-ness right now, though....losing steam on the positive attitude. I know others have it so much worse but when you're shivering cold in the dark with your kids it's easy to lose perspective.

... and then you hear stories like this. That is just wrong.

A team of Alabama utility workers said they were prevented from helping restore power in New Jersey because of regulations that required them to be members of a union.

Officials with Decatur Utilities told FOX Business that their workers were confronted by members of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers when they arrived at a staging area to help in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy.

The Alabama team was given documents by IBEW officials that “required our folks to affiliate with the union,” said Ray Hardin, general manager of the utility.

“That was something we could not agree to,” Hardin told FOX Business. “It was our understanding and still is that it was a requirement for us to work in that area.”

The utility company said they sent a six-man crew to a staging area in Virginia. They were scheduled to repair electrical service in Seaside Heights, NJ.

While at the staging area, the team received documents from IBEW that implied the workers would have to agree to affiliate with the union while working in the New York City and New Jersey areas.

“We chose we could not agree to those documents and began looking for other areas that could use our assistance without those conditions,” Hardin told FOX.

I'm so sorry. I hope they get it turned back on again.

Latest update on us: STILL NO POWER. The temperature dropped significantly and I realized that I simply had to get the kids out of the cold. My primal maternal instincts went into overdrive. Thankfully, the company I work for (3 cheers for A&E!) is actually putting us up in a hotel near the office in Manhattan!!! Can you believe that? I am so grateful. It's a challenge navigating getting the kids back to Westchester to school but it's FINE because it's WARM!! We're all sleeping in one room but we are warm and safe.

Yesterday my son twisted his ankle and it's swollen and hurts so that was what pushed me right over the edge. Today is his birthday so I kept him out of school and my Dad is making sure he has a wonderful day today.

I'm still supposed to leave town on Thursday to go see my mom in BC so I'm not sure where that leaves the family, we're playing it day by day. Watching the election on tv and trying to stay distracted but we need a game plan because it's a lot to burden my husband with when I go. No idea when we'll get power back...maybe Friday?

I am so sorry! Yay for staying in a hotel! I hope you get power back ASAP. Last April we had a lot of damage from a tornado and went 5 days without power. It was not fun, but at least it was a good temp.

Laurie I'm so sorry that your home (and so many others!) remain without power! I hope that they are able to restore it sooner than expected.

Hooray for A & E! What an awesome thing to do! I am sure you all felt much better with a warm bed (and bath/shower!)

Sorry to hear of Nathaniel's ankle. I hope he has a quick recovery and an absolutely wonderful birthday!

Wishing you all the best! If you visit your mom, safe journey!

    ~Missy
