Phone Sex Operator & SAHM

Thousands of mothers in the United States are currently earning extra income by working as phone sex operators and a rapidly increasingly number of moms are following in their footsteps, earning between $10 and $50 per hour to entertain the sexual needs of men over the phone, Good Morning America reported in a segment on working moms in the phone sex business.

The number of mothers pursuing sex work has increased by 400 percent over the past 18 months alone, according to Rat Race Rebellion, an organization that specializes in finding jobs for mothers who need to work from home.

Good Morning America interviewed Chris Durst, one of the founders of the organization, who said that the primary reason for the spike is the poor economy and the higher availability of jobs within the sex industry.

"I've applied to probably 20 to 30 jobs at like Walmart or Subway or a fast-food place," 22-year-old Aubrey, the mother of a 3-year-old son, told Good Morning America. "I just haven't gotten picked up in my area."

As the sluggish economy leads more Americans to lose their jobs, other areas of the sex industry are attracting more workers at increasing rates as well. Employers at strip clubs and other adult entertainment services are began receiving more of applications from women drawn to the quick cash and flexible hours, MSNBC reported in 2009.

Gus Poulous, the general manager of New York City's Sin City gentleman's club, told MSNBC he received 85 responses to a job he posted on Craigslist that day.

In Portugal, a nation in deep economic recession amid the debt crisis, mothers are turning to prostitution in order to feed their families, work made all the more dangerous in the thick of Europe's dangerous human trafficking networks, IPS News reported.

Job seekers looking for work in the adult entertainment industry may want to head to Williston, North Dakota. As thousands of men move to the town to take advantage of an oil boom, strippers are reporting that they can make between $2,000 and $3,000 in tips, according to CNNMoney.

What do you think? Is this wrong or survival? Would it be better to work outside the home in a more traditional job?

I have no problem with it, as long as it's not done within earshot of the kids. I have nothing morally against sex work to begin with, and phone sex isn't really sex work anyway. It's customer service. Blum 3 Just with a different topic of discussion. My SIL was a stripper for a few years; she made damned good money & the hours were flexible so she was able to take her kids to school every day & be home when they got home & go to school herself, too. If she'd worked a "normal' job she would have been limited in the hours she could work, or have to pay for after school care, and she probably couldn't have afforded to go to school or have the time for it, and she probably couldn't have made as much money even working full-time. She even had health insurance! Blum 3

If sex work is your only option and you don't want to do it but it's that or starve....I think a system that allows people to be put in this position is deeply, deeply effed.

If you have options and decide that sex work is your best option....rock on with your bad self (does anyone say that anymore?) Adults should have the right to have sex with (or talk dirty to) any other adults for any reason that they wish. I think it's funny that we try to legislate that it's okay to have sex with someone because you want to get back at your boyfriend, or because you're drunk and feeling bad about yourself, or to be more popular in high school, or whatever crappy reason people have sex, but suddenly we get all uptight if someone wants to do the same act for money and someone else is willing to pay for it. (steps off of soapbox)

In short, I don't really care if SAHMs choose to be phone sex operators. Presumably they are not doing it in front of the kids, so why does it matter that they are moms, assuming it is their choice?

The only problem I have with the article is the poor economy, no jobs, no money, etc and YET a booming sex industry. People and priorities are screwed up.

I have no issues with sex phone operators or strippers; it's a job. And if as a female feel OK doing that type of a job then I say go for it - more power to you. I've heard the money is fantastic; no wonder those jobs grow fast. I don't have enough courage for something like that so I'll stick with a regular desk job.

They are adutls so they can do as they wish. I do think though that it may come at a cost if people were to find out and that is just soemthign you will have to live with. But if you are fine with it, then go ahead.

Hahaha - has anyone seen the movie Horrible Bosses? That scene where Charlie Day is trying to talk dirty to Jennifer Aniston? That would be me. "I'm jumping up and down on your butt!"

I heard this is their typical night's pay and on a good night, they get upwards to $10,000/night as the men are throwing their cash out to . I can see why some are willing to adjust even if it means renting a camper for a minimum of $1,800/mth since there isn't adequate housing in the area. The scary thing I've heard is that the rape incidences have significantly increased... men with men.

In Williston, ND... with the oil boom and a huge increase in the male population in the rinky dink town with not many single women, it's increased the male sexual assaults against men.

Oh. I thought you were saying that the upswing of strippers in the area had led to an increase of man on man rape, and I didn't get the cause and effect.

Sounds like any oil boom town. That's what we want to build a huge pipeline to?

Noelle, thanks for posting this... I've been wanting to be a SAHM but can't currently afford it... I think I just figured out how I can now lol! In all seriouness, I don't have a problem with it at all. People are in dire situations because of the economy, and whether you have children or not doesn't matter, you have to provide for you and your family in whatever industry is at your door.
