The right to parent

Personally, I am sick to my back teeth of reading about people abusing children. The latest was a man and woman who beat their tiny daughter up so badly, they rupture her stomach wall!!

As a lot of these people only get a small amount of years in prison, do you think part of their punishment should be to have 'the snip', both men and women? Or do they have the 'right' to become parents again once they leave to live normal lives?

Iyou have to physically alter someone for the rest of their life because you don't trust them to be rehabilitated, then they shouldn't be let out of jail.

Sad as these situations are, I don't feel that physically altering someone to disable their ability to parent is not cruel and unusual punishment.

If you believe in rehabilitation, then why would physical impairment be neccessary?

That is a slippery slope you propose, my friend.

Perhaps the money that would be used to render someone infertile would better be used for parental counseling.

Procreation removal presumes an inability to rehabilitate. If rehabilitation is impossible then...well you fill in the blank. And the slide down the slope begins.

violent offenders shouldn't be released. Oh and I am pro death penalty.. so in my ideal system .. no medical intervention necessary. I would be for free sterilization for those on welfare.. if they want it, I am against forcing, but would understand the desire for it for those with lots of kids on the state dime, and still having more.

Where is that popcorn?

Free sterilization for the poor. And that is so nice that you are against forcing them to be sterilized. Would there be financial incentives for them to be permanently fixed?

Wow! What a wild place this board can be.

Not forced, but free option for women especially if they want their tubes tied. We already pay for their BCpills, I would be for the state paying if they want a permenant option.

What leads you to believe that these are not already covered expenses for Medical Assistance? You forgot the male's choice, too... would they not have a free option?

So voluntary eugenics? They tried this before (although not voluntary) with some horrible consequences. I cannot agree with sterilization of any particular group just because of who they are. That is a slippery slippery slope. What next? Sterilize those with disabilities as long as it is voluntary by them or their caregiver? They tried that too (in 1930s Germany).

It is covered here for anyone who wants it. I think the rights to birth control (permanent or otherwise) should extend to all regardless of income.

It's also already covered under Medical Assistance and private insurance. So those that are on welfare and still having kids are obviously making the choice already, no?

What. the. hell.

Anyway, I feel like people should have the right to be a parent, but not every person should have the right to continue to parent if their actions prove to be unfit.

I don't believe parenting is a right in the first place, but no, I'm not for sterlization either. I just don't think parents who abuse the $hit out of their kids, stepkids, etc. should ever be allowed in the same room with kids ever again. That's all. That's a knee jerk statement and not very well thought out, I admit.

I agree with this. I don't think it should be forced, or incentivized, or pushed, or encouraged, or anything like that. But I do believe that everyone who wants BC (including permanent, if that is what they want) should have access to it regardless of their income. Then again, I believe that everyone should have access to all medical care regardless of income, so take it for what you will.

This has gone off track.

Back to the original question... I think any man or woman who chooses to harm a child should have the right to reproduce taken from them. Without a shadow of a doubt!

Really? So a parent who smokes should be sterilized? Secondhand smoke is proven to harm children. A parent who is impoverished should be sterilized? Food insecurity and poverty harms children. Do I have to continue or do you get my point?

Can we sterilize bigots, racists, and heterosexists? I think they harm children.
