“This bill is first and foremost about public safety. It’s about knowing who is driving on our roads, and doing everything we can to make sure those drivers are safe and that they’re operating registered, insured vehicles." Malloy said in a statement.

The state Senate passed the legislation a week after the state House of Representatives passed the bill to allow licenses regardless of citizenship or immigration status.

Supporters said the legislation would create millions of dollars in state revenue and make the roads safer.

“Allowing undocumented drivers to get a license ensures that they are just as accountable to the laws of our roads as everyone else. This bill allows people to carry out their lives while encouraging them to be safe and properly ensured while on the road.” Senator Terry Gerratana (D-New Britain) said in a statement.

For these reasons I think it makes a lot of sense.

The alternative is not a good one.

Of course, because if one of them hits me damn straight I want them to have insurance.

I support it and it makes sense. I want documented drivers and totally agree with the safety aspect.

If you don't want illegal immigrants driving, that's a different issue. You should probably start by talking to people who want to hire them and want them to show up for work.

I am interested in the responses to this as it is not something I have thought a lot about. My initial reaction is to say that no, they should not be able to get a drivers licence. That said, I have never been in the situation so I do not know all of the ramifications.

agreed, but license doesn't neccessarily = insurance. You are required to have insurance if you own a car, but you can have a license without having insurance I believe.

Saying this because I have been in an accident with someone with a license, but no insurance before. Not sure if it was just lapsed, but they had a valid license, but were uninsured.

But is the opposite true? Yes, you can have a license but no insurance, but can you have insurance without having a license?

No you cannot. And in my state you can't have your car inspected (which is required annually) without proof of insurance. If you get pulled over and do t have insurance you are ticketed and have a time frame within you have to obtain it. Of course it isn't perfect but it's a sight better than nothing.

Also, taking the driving test insures that people who may not speak the language can recognize and understand traffic signs and basic and important traffic rules. That is important for the safety of all of us on the roads.

It's required to have insurance here in Mass. and you can't have insurance without being able to drive.

I had my license but if I drove I needed to be insured under the cars I drove. Even though I didn't own them I was insured on them.

I'm okay with this for the reasons mentioned. More likely to not have to eat it or have *MY* insurance pay if I get hit by someone without a license and without insurance.
