If it was a true government shut down why wasn't the PO and all schools closed down... maybe I am just really just not getting the whole point of the "shut down" to begin with.

I'm pretty sure no one is forcing him to barricade open air monuments that are normally open 24 hours with no park service employees present. It makes him look petty just like refusing to negotiate. Out of 53 debt limit increases 27 of those were tied to some kind of deal. Never before has a president refused to negotiate.

Congressional Republicans who want legislative conditions in exchange for a debt-limit increase are following a strategy that has been pursued by both parties the majority of the time. Of the 53 increases in the debt limit, 26 were “clean”—that is, stand-alone, no strings-attached statutes. The remaining debt-limit increases were part of an omnibus package of other legislative bills or a continuing resolution. Other times, the limit was paired with reforms, only some of which were related to the budget.

Yeah, shutting down open air parks is a thing that happens when the government shuts down. I'm sure the GOP knew that before they shut the government down, which is why it's so very tiring that they are complaining about it now. Here are some pictures of when it happened before (pictures from the 1995 shutdown.)

    Also, regarding "Won't Compromise":

    3. The Democrats won’t compromise, wah wah wah!

A huge lie. Here’s a fact I’d bet no more than 2 percent of the American public knows: that “clean” continuing resolution the Senate passed, with Democrats backing it and Republicans opposing it? That CR carried the levels of funding for government agencies demanded by Republicans, not Democrats.

That’s right. The Senate CR funds the government in the coming weeks at a level of $988 billion. The Democrats wanted $1.058 billion. But they passed a bill at Republican levels. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said late last week: “My caucus really didn’t like that. We took a real hit…So that’s one of the largest compromises since I’ve been in Congress.”

Now why did they pass a bill at the GOP’s preferred levels? Because, Reid said late last week, he had assurances from Boehner that the House speaker wouldn’t attach demands to the Senate CR if Reid brought it in at $988 billion. So this whole thing started with a significant Democratic compromise. But once the Republicans decided that they were going to use both the shutdown and the debt ceiling to try to defund and/or delay Obamacare, they couldn’t even vote for a bill that gave them a major fiscal victory. That’s how dug in and crazy they are.
Here Are Three Debt-Ceiling Lies You

The GOP has been PLANNING this shutdown for months. They did exactly what they have been planning to do.

House GOP plotted Obamacare shutdown since Obama's second term began

So yeah, if you're upset about the parks being closed (and oh my gosh, they are actually enforcing the parks being closed instead of, what, pretending they are open???? THE NERVE!!!!) then go ahead and blame the party that has been planning this at least since February, if not longer.

Did enforcing the open air parks to be closed cost more than keeping them open?

I don't know, but I bet it's a liability issue. You just know some jerk is going to try to climb Mt Rushmore when there is no one there to stop him, get hurt, and then want to sue the government for not boarding things up properly.

I can live without the parks. It seems kind of petty to close something that costs nothing to leave open, but as I said it just makes Obama look bad.

Refusing to raise the debt ceiling means default.

Absolutely false. Limiting the debt ceiling forces Obama to make painful budgetary choices. He could slash social, other domestic, or military spending, or default on debts. His programs such as Obamacare added $6 trillion in new debt. He could repeal that. Default would be his decision.

Maybe someone should sue for not being able to pull over to the side of the road on the highway by Mt. Rushmore if their car breaks down.

Schools aren't closed because they are at the state level. PO is deemed a necessary service and therefore won't be shut down.
