If you live in a "do not disconnect" state, then you can leave a real landline phone plugged into a wall jack even if you don't have local service and it can be used to dial 911 in an emergency; call your state PUC or PSC to find out. Another thing to consider is if you live in an area where your power goes out routinely, can you keep your cell charged? If not, then how will you call 911? The 3-day snowstorm that knocked out her power *and* kept her from getting out to her truck was what finally prompted my mom to get a landline.

Do they still have analog lines in your area? Here everything is switching to digital and they won't work without power. When my power went out the phone didn't work either.

Some states are leaving the emergency service calls on analog precisely because they still work whether there is electric power or not, and you can still make a call to an emergency center if your home loses power. I don't know which states, but that's what I've heard. This is a very important issue in the telecom circles right now, and it's especially important in low-income areas where cell phone use tends to be lower and landline subsidies are being cut. People need to be able to call the police or fire department even when the power is out.

I think that is going to be impossible to maintain, since all new lines going in are digital. The area where I live is a new development that has never had analog lines. Isn't that the whole point of the Obamaphones so that all the low income people can have their own cell phone? Most cell phone batteries last for 2 or 3 days now, longer depending on how much time you spend talking.

Total side note, but why do you call them Obamaphones?

It is pretty common terminology around here now. You can thank the Obamaphone lady

We still have our home line because it keeps our cable and internet bill much lower. We have the most basic package, since we hardly ever use it. All of our family members are with AT&T for our cell service, so it's free to call them.
