Soccer team switcharoo -- WWYD? update in post #9
In our area, there are two levels of youth soccer: rec and prep. Rec is just for fun; if you want to play, you'll be on a team. There are no playoffs, no standings are kept, practices are once a week, and most coaches are parent volunteers. Prep is competitive; you have to try out for teams, there are playoffs & standings, practices are twice a week and you can be dropped from your team for missing too many, and paid professional coaches are the norm. Tiven has played rec for many years and has expressed an interest in moving up, partly because she was getting frustrated with losing games because her teammates didn't show up for practice, and partly because she loves the game & wants to keep getting better at it. In January, she tried out for a few prep teams, and was accepted on one of them. We paid a "club fee" of $250 in addition to league registration and waited for news about the season. Something seemed odd last week when we were told that practice would be on Wednesdays; when I questioned why there weren't two practices, I was told that there was a glitch with the parks department and we'd find out soon when our second practice would be. Today I found out, by poking around on the league website, that this team is NOT prep, but rec. It's not playing at the competitive level, it's playing at the just-for-fun level. What would you do? Trying to find a different team at this late point might be difficult, and especially since I've turned down recent offers from other prep teams because we thought Tiven was on one! If we leave her on this team, do we tell her that it's rec? This team is going to play against other teams she's played before at the rec level, including her school team, so the truth is likely to come out.
