Star Trek debates

Since there are a few of us trekkie types on here I will pose the questions that have caused much debate amongst my friends...

Who is the best Star Trek Captain?

Who is the best TNG character?

Easy for me: Jean Luc and Jean Luc. If you mean character other than Jean Luc, I'd have to say Data. Out of any Star Trek series my DH would say 7 of 9.

No. Any character.

Of course the men like 7 of 9. Or Troy in that pants suit.

It's a hard one. Kirk was the first (though you could argue Jonathan Archer was first but though I love Scott Bakula, he is not in the Kirk-Picard league) and I think sine he had no others to reserach, he should get special props for that.

However, asmuch of a d**k as Stewart is, he brought his amazing acting skills to the role. His body of Shakespeare and theatre work really gave Picard that special something. It's almost like Shatner tried to be regal, but Stewart just was. But then again, Kirk was supposed to be the rebel crazy one whom you could trust and Picard was more like the reserved professional that everyone trusted. But if I had to go into space I would want the reserved regal professional vs. the adventurous sexy genius. So my pick is Picard, hands down.

As to best character ever, I would choose in the original series Spock. In TNG, out fo the main cast, I always had a soft spot for Geordi. I'll tell you who I always hated, Dr. Pulaski. blech.

I have to say I did not like Bakula as a Captain. He just didn't do it for me. In fact I would prefer to imagine that Enterprise did not exist at all. I feel better about star trek as a whole without it. It just did not live up to the others.

You know who else was awesome? Lwaxana Troy. I love to watch her make the men squirm!

Captain Picard was the best captain, but I loved Kirk and Janeway. Yes I said Janeway!!!

Loved Seven Of Nine, loved Data when he wasn't trying to have emotions, loved Spock for many many years before there was a TNG. Also thought Dax was awesome.

Disliked: Ferengis in general (although Quark had his moments), Lwaxana, Pulaski, and both The Doctor and Neelix started getting REALLY annoying by the end of Voyager. They were both great when they started.

I LOVE STAR TREK FOREVER AND EVER!!

Agree about Enterprise. Watched every episode but disliked it immensely. Liked Trip Tucker. Thought Scott Bakula, normally talented and great, was terribly miscast or just played it all wrong. Benjamin Bratt would have been so much better.

Really? You dislike Lwaxana? Why? She is a fabuous actress and the episode, Cost of Living I think with Alexander was super cute. How can you hate the voice of the computer and Mrs. Roddenberry!?!

Am in the only Klingon enthusiast in this bunch? Worf was my favorite and all the epsiodes revolving around Klingon storylines.

But you know, i was also a DS9 fan and i know a lot of people aren't...so maybe i'm just an outlier

And i agree with the consensus, Picard was the best captain.

Nope, not a Klingon fan. I liked Worf, but that's about it. And I detested DS9 because of it's darkness.

I've never seen Star Trek, but that is because I think that everyone who watches it is a bad parent.

Definitely Picard.

As for favorite character, I have to admit that I had a huge crush on Westley Crusher when I was growing up. But now that I am older and wiser I would probably have to say Data, but its a close race between all the core staff.

Oh and I am also not a fan of enterprise (had managed to erase that one from my mind before this debate), or DS9 (but my husband was a huge fan). My favorites were the next gen and Voyager. The original was just never really on my radar.

And Im only a bad parent when Im actually watching it!:p

I quite liked DS9. It was definitely darker but it wasn't so happy and shiny like TNG.

And Worf is another of my favorites. I love the scene where he describes Klingon courting rituals. Priceless.

I will admit that I too had a crush on Wesley when TNG originally ran. To my defense I was 12. Wil Wheaton is actually a decent actor though. He is hilarious on Big Bang Theory.

Lieutenant Worf: Men do not roar. Women roar. Then they hurl heavy objects... and claw at you.
Wesley Crusher: What does the man do?
Lieutenant Worf: [dreamily] He reads love poetry...
Lieutenant Worf: [back to his serious self] He ducks a lot.

First Contact. Ah the Borg....

I did quite enjoy Generations. I loved seeing Data get emotions and finally understand all the jokes. And it was one of the only times that Kirk didn't annoy me to no end.

Anyone who doesn't watch Star Trek is a bad parent because they are depriving their children of cultural exposure. Smile

I really enjoyed him as an evil hacker/mastermind on Leverage recently as well.

Loved First Contact. James Cromwell is awesomeand the actress who played Lilly was great. I loved that character or any character that can talk sense into Picard. Kind of like Gynan.

Generations is probably my favorite. And not just because Picard and Kirk ride horses and that's freaking awesome. (BTW, did you know that Shatner is a very accomplished American Saddlebred breeder? And those were his horses.)

Now lets talk about Nemisis. I really liked this movie, the whole premise and the actor who played Shinzon (who was awesome in Inception). However, I have never been able to get over one thing which ruins the whole dang movie for me.Maybe one ofmy fellow nerd could explain it. Fair warning, this discussion is about to goto new levels of nerdyness, the likes of which none have seen on this board. I apologize in advance.

OK so the movie is all about Picard as a youth and cloning. At one point Picard is in his ready room looking at a picture of himself as a young cadette in Starfleet. In the picture he is bald, which makes sense because Shinzon is bald and heis his clone. right? However, in the episode of TNG entitled Tapestry, with Q (another of my favs) where Picard goes back to his youth in Starfleet, what do you see.....anyone......anyone.....Bueller?

HAIR!!!!!!!!!!! The man has hair. WTF?!? This little nerdy pathetic detail is what ruins the whole movie for me since the time I saw it in the theaters (and yes I waited a long time inline ot get in the moment it openned and no, I did not dress up).

I loved the computer, Nurse Chapel, and Mrs. Roddenberry. Hated Lwaxana and HATED Alexander most of all. Lwaxana was only fun when she was interfering directly in Deanna's life, but giving her her own storylines was super irritating.

The only kid I really liked was the one on Voyager who wanted to be the Captain's Assistant. She was cool and I loved her friendship with Seven Of Nine.

Okay risky question: anyone else love the NEW movie? The Chris Pine one? I thought they did a great job with it.

Oh, oh, I did! Oh yay, that's like my one entrez into this discussion. I don't even know why we went to see that movie (neither DH nor I have ever been ST fans) but I REALLY liked it. I thought it was great, even as a stand alone movie to someone who has no background in ST other than pop culture references. And I liked that Sylar (Zachary Quinto) played the young Spock. I like him.

Would you believe it the one time we tried to watch this movie at home....i fell asleep. To be fair, i remember being really exhausted at the time and not thinking i would make it through any movie. Seamus watched the whole thing though and liked it a lot.

I agree with you that Alexander wasn't very likeable...but i do think that scene at the end of Cost of Living with Lwaxana, Worf and Alexander in the mud bath is pretty funny. LOL

Only because of Worf. Worf in the mud bath was awesome.

I was wondering if I was the only one... I do think I've seen all of the original episodes, but mostly because of the awesome drinking games and the crowd we hung with in the 80s.

Being older than most of you, I grew up as a Trek fan in a Star Trek-free era....the original series ended when I was 3, I watched re-runs like crazy, but there wasn't a movie until 1979 and I was in 8th grade. YEARS of loving a show that nobody else seemed to like is wearing on a nerdy kid.

Now it is beyond exciting when my son (age 7) asks to play with my action figures. Smile

I dislike anything to do with aliens, outer space, or time travel... Star Trek fits firmly in the genre.

I also like annoying my DH by using using the titles Star Trek and Star Wars interchangeably.
