I do not give candy if not in a costume. If you are in a costume...don't care how old you are you are getting candy :)
They do not eat all the candy. I take :) the ones they can't have or don't like and they get to have some over the next few days. Then I put it in the candy bowl. Adults can have and they get a piece here and there as a treat.
I haven't ever gotten any teens that didn't even attempt to dress up. Sometimes they will just paint their face or wear a bandana or wig or something. I don't really mind giving them candy because I have kids that age and I know they are at the age where it is hard to give up the fun of Halloween, but yet they are a little embarrassed to dress up.
I put up all the candy and give it out one or two pieces at a time.
Exactly! 1 year I went with my brother who was about 12 I think...he wanted to go but felt dumb. We dressed up and we got candy too.Quote:

1)Do you take your kids trick or treating on Halloween? Of course!
2)If so, what time do you start out? (Earlier than dusk? Later?) Right around dusk, no earlier. It's All Hallows Eve, not All Hallows Afternoon.
3)Dinner before or after? (Also, do you have a *traditional* meal?) The last couple of years we've gone with a group from school so we have a good snack before heading over there, and then a potluck dinner when we get back to the host's apartment. It's a ton of fun!
4)Do you and your partner both take the kids or one stay behind to give out candy? We both go since we get no TOTers in our neighborhood.
5)When do you "close" / end? When the candy runs out or at a certain hour? When we lived in a neighborhood with TOTers we turned the light out at 8:30pm. We figured two hours of darkness was plenty of time.
6)Do you give candy out to older kids who are just holding a pillow case and have no costume? :smile: Nope! My only exception is an older kid who's obviously been forced to take younger siblings around, I'll always take pity on them.
7)Do you allow your kids to eat all the candy? If not, what do you do with it all? They can eat as much as they want on Halloween night. The rest goes in a bowl on the fridge for me... oops, I mean... to be doled out as treats, rewards, bribery, etc.
And I'll add two questions: Allergies aside, is there anything you don't let your kids have? And if you do get rid of anything, what do you do, toss or trade? I don't let my kids keep anything with gelatin, since we're vegetarian. When we get back from TOTing, the kids all dump out their bags and trade what they don't want so we rarely get home with anything my kids don't like or that I don't want them to have. One of our friends last year took out all her kids' Tootsie Pops, saying that the wrappers could too easily be opened and the candy tampered with. I happily took them off her hands since they all seemed to be well-wrapped. :p
I LOVE to give candy to the hardworking moms or dads that take their little kids around for halloween. They are always appreciative lol
I will to teenagers that dress up. We have some here at our school in the special ed department that have the mental age of a much smaller person, and really enjoy trick or treating as much as any small child. You can't really judge by just looking sometimes, and it's worth the price of the candy not to hurt the feelings. Even if they aren't special kids, at least they put the effort into it! :)
For teens that don't dress up? I haven't had them yet, but I don't love the idea. Probably would just do it, because it's not worth an argument or ruining the night for anyone just to hand out one piece of free candy...
My kids? Well they are 12 and 11, so I probably won't try TOO hard to keep it from them. (Megan is taller than me, so the top of the fridge just doesn't work anymore!! lol) I did keep it when they were little though :)
Yes! I cant believe the weather this year. Most years it holds off until after halloween, but apparently we are getting an early winter this year. It is always a challenge to get the snowsuit on under the costume, or leave some pieces of winter gear off so that some of the costume underneath can be seen. I always feel bad for all the kids going door to door with essentially no costume visible :)Quote:
