Default Unaccompanied Minors arriving in U.S.

What do you believe should be the long term solution for the influx of unaccompanied minors arriving from Mexico, Honduras, El Salvador, Guatemala and more? Your solution should address the care and financial responsibility of those that have arrived (or will). Secondly -- what action do you believe should be taken (if any) to slow/stop the flood of young immigrants.

The Daily Mail? Isn't there a newspaper covering this?

There are tons of articles available. I did opt for that one late last night simply because it had summarized the main points of the crisis. Here are several examples along with sources. Choose your favorite or do a search on your favorite news site to see if they have covered the story:

Here are the debate questions again:

What a truly sad situation. I do not know what all the answers are. While I wish that everyone that wanted to come to America could, that is just not practical at this time. There are not enough foster families in place for the children that are already here. Better boarder practices need to be put in place to keep people from crossing that can not support themselves. At the same time, immigration needs to be greatly improved so that people can come over legally. DH's aunt married a man from Europe over a year ago. I think from England. Even though he is married to an American, college educated and has the means to support himself, the paperwork and red tape alone have taken will over a year to get him here.

More towns/cities are objecting to housing these kids -- even on a temporary basis:

Fighting back: Residents force feds to scrap plan to house illegals at Va. college
    (Washington Times)

Thinking as a parent, I do understand that there are situations so incredibly desperate that I would want my child(ren) to escape to a better life. Some mothers I worked with in the past from Columbia and Honduras had shared their concern for their kids' fate as their villages were 'often' raided and girls as young as 8 were raped, beaten and at times - killed. I can't (thankfully) envision that kind of constant fear for my family.

Still, I recognize that our country cannot withstand complete 'open door' policy either.

Bonita, I agree that the process could / should be streamlined - particularly in cases like you mentioned. I am guessing that the backlog is so deep now.

I would prefer these countries address the issues at hand (drug cartels, improving their own economies and standards of living.) If the U.S. could assist in those efforts - great. This is where the U.N. could aid as well.

I do feel that the Border Patrol needs to have some other department to take over the care-giving. We need them to be doing their jobs vs. so much of their time / resources tied up with 'babysitting.'
