    Default Walmart vs. McDonalds

You've been out of work for too long. You're getting desperate. You're offered similar jobs at Walmart and at McDonalds. The pay is the same, the hours offered are the same. Why would you choose one over the other?

I believe both here and where my Aunt lives in Ohio and where my parents live in NY, McDonalds pays minimum wage exactly. No more unless you are a manager and then only a tad more. My cousin is married with 4 kids and works full time with McDonalds and makes minimum wage. His sister is a manager and makes $8/hour. Walmart might not pay that much more, but they do pay more. I believe even the lowest level Walmart worker would make more than a manager at McDonalds.

Also, having know people who work at both, I believe Walmart to be a better working environment with more opportunity to advance into higher level positions.

I would choose McDonalds. Walmart is the epitome of corporate evil IMHO; they demand tax advantages to come into a community, but then they destroy as many other local businesses as they can, and if the leftover economy can't support that particular store, they close it down & leave. Most McDonalds are locally-owned franchises so the owners have a commitment to the community. I'd rather put money into a neighbor's pocket than the Walton Family; I think Sam Walton is probably spinning his grave over what they've done to his business.

Can I pick neither? DH worked at Mcdonald's when he was a kid so I know too much from him lol. I may rather starve.

I have also worked fast food (Not McDonalds) and have no desire to do it again. There are parts of Walmart (The fabric desk, photo department) that I do not think I would mind at all. I would not want to work the returns desk.

I would like to say I would never work at either one. I would keep my face clean and babysit, it sh!t hit the fan and I had to make money (babysitters around here clean UP with cash tax free).......but I would never, ever, work for Walmart. I truly believe that they are undermining the American dream in a way in which most americans don't understand.

I believe that McDonalds (and you guys have heard me rant about fast food enough to know that my kids have never had it and I have not had it since I was a tween or some such).....and while I believe that it is undermining the planets health rapidly......new research just came out about fast food and asthma (which I believe we debated heatedly a summer ago, and I talked about, and people were all nuh-UH....and now it is coming out. But anyway). I think that fast food makes people unhealthy, and then dead sooner rather than later.

If I had a gun to my head you would find me dropping fries into the deep fryer before scanning goods at Walmart. Again, a gun to head or sell your teeth for your baybee sort of Les Mis scenario.

I think i'd have to go with McDonals before Walmart, only because I loathe Walmart more than i do McDonald's as a company but like several others I'd really rather not work at either of course.

If i had to pick some job in the unskilled labor market, i'd work at a grocery store chain, obviously depending on which one as I'm sure some are better than others. DH took a part time job working as a cashier at a local grocery store when he was a stay at home dad for some extra cash...quickly was moved up to front end supervisor. He did that for a while and eventually interviewed for a job that put him as an HR manager over a zone of stores.

This particular grocery store chain(non unionized) has proven to me on more than one occasion that they would provide opportunities for employees that worked hard and showed potential. While my husband had an upper hand in his situation because he had a college education and a very good job before he did the SAHD thing...there were many people in this company who had worked there their entire life, starting out at check-out and making gradual steps through the company and eventually landing in a life long, good paying job.

They also offered decent benefits to their employees as well.

I wish more companies had the same mentality.

ETA: Okay, only over half a day after i wrote this post and i realized I said walmart over mcDs when i meant it the other way around! Hopefully that was evidence from the rest of my sentence. What the heck is wrong with me?!

I would pick McDonald's but not for any of the reasons listed so far. When I walk into a Walmart (or Costco), my stress increases so much that I couldn't handle working there. I do shop there on occasion, usually when others are with me or I want a specific item only Walmart carries.
