I'm so sad for the Martin family. I can't imagine the pain of losing your child, seeing people try to drag his every youthful discretion through the mud (he smoked pot and flipped off the camera in a picture -obviously he was a violent criminal!) and then see his killer get off scott free. I hope they are able to find some peace.

A lot of what has come out about him reminds me of my nephew. He's 17, has kind of a punk attitude, smokes pot occassionally (or more), and *gasp* wears hoodies. Oh, he also says really stupid stuff on Twitter. Regardless, he wouldn't hurt a fly. And he could totally be walking home from the corner store after buying skittles and a drink and get shot by someone who thinks he looks fishy. Oh, he happens to be white, too, but it is so sad to me to think that he could lose his life thanks to some over-zealous neighborhood watch dude with a gun. Just crazy. I really don't think this case is about race, which is what I'm seeing everyone (not here, on FB, for example) raging about. It's just about the precident that's being set in general. You can chase after someone if you think they look suspicous in any way (and after being advised not to by 9-1-1 dispatchers), and when that someone tries to defend himself or herself, you can shoot them. Oh yeah, totally self-defense.

I'm so annoyed with people posting stupid stories on FB of crimes that occurred against white people (often by minorities) but "you didn't hear about this in the news". Well, maybe because the perpetrators didn't chase after someone, kill them, and then claim self-defense. I mean, come on, let's all be logical and compare apples to apples.

With all that said, from what I've seen and read, I can somewhat see why the jury reached the decision they did. The prosecutors had to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that it wasn't self-defense. That's the way our legal system works and I think, with the facts presented, there was a reasonable doubt. Had it been the other way around, and the defense had to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that it WAS self-defense, they would have lost as well. There were just too many unanswered questions. I don't blame the jury, but I do think it's incredibly sad that a man whose actions caused the death of a teenager will walk free.

One thing that grabbed my attention today is that someone pointed out that supposedly GZ shot TM while he was pounding his head into the sidewalk....but TM's body was laying in the grass away from the sidewalk. It still doesn't make any sense to me. It was just so poorly handled.

I can't believe the people saying that if GZ was black he wouldn't have been arrested. For real? Last I checked, black men are like 6x more likely to go to jail for the same type of cases. Try to picture a scenario where an armed black man chases and kills an unarmed white teen walking home from buying candy and DOESN'T go to jail for it.

He still is Hispanic. He's still alive. The black boy he shot is not. And "Hispanic" is not a race, it's an ethnicity.

I don't think the color of his skin, nor the color of Trayvon's skin, is what we should choose to remember.

I do not think it matters a WHIT.. that is why I am pointing out the craziness of all the white vs black talk. If someone was walking around my neighborhood.. sure as anything I would figure out what was up.. I discussed it today with my dh and a friend who is a trained cop.. they would load their weapons.. call 911 and head after him.. with a vehicle.. So yes. it would be a common reaction.. BOTH said they would have shot the boy if he was beating their head against the concrete..

I apologize, as I don't know your name Rivergallery. I wasn't saying one way or another if someone should have or shouldn't have done X or Y. I just think the general public's reaction to this is so focused on race, and at the end of the day color wasn't the most important part of what occurred.

I agree.. and think it was even sillier and media crazy as Zimmerman wasn't/isn't even white!

That sounds like a super scary neighborhood Rachel. People go after other people with loaded guns? Man. I run and walk around other neighborhoods- so glad people aren't coming after me with their guns loaded just for being healthy!
