December chat

Holy crap it's 2 weeks till Christmas eve!!! So much left to do I'm going to end up running around like a crazy woman next week to finish it all up I can feel it... yikes!

This week is DD's first appointment (tomorrow) with OT, 3 days of volunteering at the school for their Christmas Bazaar, plus skating and brownies (girl guides), oh and it's snowing so the little bit I managed to go out and get this morning will be it for the day, roads are horrible and people do NOT know how to drive...

Next week is the school concert and turkey dinner, a doctor's appointment and then school is out... yikes!!!!!!!!

Anyone else still have Christmas stuff to do?? Or am I the only slacker? I thought I was doing so well too I had my cards out for Dec 1st and everything.....

Wow - Crystal, don't worry....... I haven't even DONE our Xmas cards yet, let alone sent them out!! I am so behind, it's crazy - and I can't believe it's only 2 weeks away?? How did it come up so fast?!?

So this week we have:
prenatal class on tuesday, dance on wednesday, NST and U/S on Weds, staff party on Thurs (mine), Dr's appt on Fri, staff party on Friday (DH's), maternity pics on saturday, and tree decorating party at my mom's on Sunday.

Next week we have:
prenatal class on Tuesday, dance on Weds, GD clinic for check up on Weds, DH starts new position at work on Thurs (his contract ended in November, so he's been doing casual work at the hospital, and he got a permanent full time position, but doesn't start until Dec 20th!), my Year End for work is due Friday, and family from out of town on Saturday.

Then X-mas week:
24th is my brother's B-day and X-mas with my dad, 25th is Xmas at home, and making my first solo Xmas dinner, 26th is Xmas at my moms, then the 29th DH's family invited themselves down for Xmas celebrations (and a second full Xmas dinner) at our place.

In with all of that, I still have to do all my shopping, make and send Xmas cards, trying to finish the Xmas gifts I'm making, visit some friends, enjoy going and seeing the lights downtown, trying to do some shopping without DH (we're only doing stockings for each other, no big gifts this year)........Thank god I'm going on holidays as of the 21st, and not going back to work until the 2nd! I *SOOOOOO* need some time away from work!

I'm exhausted just thinking about how much else there is to do! We did however put up our tree last night, and watch DH's favourite Xmas movie of all time....."The Muppet's Christmas Carol". Yup, the one with Kermit the Frog!

How's everyone else's holiday prep coming? Please tell me I'm not the only one this far behind?!? I have a feeling that by the time I actually get everything done, it'll be mid January and I'll have missed Christmas!!

Crystal, I'm jealous you guys are getting snow!! But I know what you mean......living on the coast you get that awful heavy, wet 'coastal snow' and it seems no one knows how to drive in it! If we get more than 3 inches, the city all but shuts down! (.....granted, we have a large population of elderly people, so I'm all the happier if they stay off the roads ;))

Jo I forgot all about checking out lights, we usually would go to the Reserve, where 90% of the houses go Griswald. This year we need to find a new neighborhood to check out, I even promised DD, thankfully she hasn't mentioned it yet... eek

We're on the Bay de Chaleur in Northern NB, the city is used to large amounts of snow, the streets will be nearly half as wide come February and snow banks higher than most homes. Today we got about 10 cm and suddenly everyone lost their senses, in the 30 minutes I was out I was nearly hit 2x, once from behind and once because the guy making a left turn on the other side of the street didn't feel like waiting for a break in traffic and cut me off... makes me excited for winter... sigh....

I'm only making a small dinner, probably a roast beef, keeping it simple since we'll be leaving for a week starting on boxing day, I have no desire to lug leftovers with us and my IL's will have plenty I'm sure!

My cards and my tree are the only things I've managed so far!

Just started xmas shopping here, and we do it all online. Oh, and we don't do xmas cards. LOL I have really been procrastinating lately. I do not even have everything I need ready for baby. She doesn't even have a bed yet. Ugh.

Both of my sons' birthdays fall one week before and 2 weeks after Christmas, so we are always really busy this time of year. Plus, my 7 year old is doing bball games, I work full time, and I am in graduate school full time. Whew. I am tired just thinking about it! Can't wait til the holidays are over (even though I love this time of year) bc that means we are close to meeting out babies!

My DD's b'day is NYE, so I feel ya on the birthday stressers too, since people are usually away or have plans we throw her a party earlier in December so she can have kids there too. She ends up with 2 parties one for her friends and one for family (typically a brunch on her real b'day) with 30 to 40 people. Our families are all really close lol

This year she will be going to visit her bio dad for the night on NYE so we're kid free for the first time since DH and I met. What will we DO with ourselves?? Need to find a party I think!

Anyone else feeling pressure? Like baby is pushing on my stomach with her feet and trying to stretch out causing pressure in my pelvis... it hurts everywhere when she does it!

I had a 'chat' with her today and told her that in 8 weeks or so she'll be evicted lol

Yes been hurting lots lately. If its not pelvic pain, its back pain or painful braxton hicks. I know she need to hang out for 6 weeks or so, but I am so ready to be done being pregnant.

I really hope I don't end up going to 41 weeks... I'm getting to the point I feel done as well. she pushes so much on my stomach I can barely eat and the heartburn is horrible. Nothing makes it better either.

I've been researching some of the old wives tales and natural ways to induce labor, I plan to ask my OB about them for when I hit 37 weeks. I know some say if your body isn't ready nothing will work but it might be worth a shot...

So far the top contenders are Fenugreek, Evening primrose oil, Black cohosh, and raspberry leaf tea. I tried castor oil with DD1 and won't use that again, it caused extremely painful contractions for 12 hours, severe diarrhea and vomiting, and at best I dilated 1cm. Not worth it.

I definitely will not be going to 41 weeks! I plan to have my 40 week appt and if she's not here, asking to be induced. I will probably also start playing around at 37 weeks just to have fun... I agree if you're body isn't ready nothing will work anyways, just make you miserable. Tell me more about the things you mentioned. I have only heard of castrol oil, and that does not sound appealing to me.

I had a great induction with my last one, so I am not afraid to ask for that. But would insist I go until at least 40 weeks before I do... something about the # 40. Makes it more OK in my mind. Smile

They won't induce here until 41 weeks unless there is a medical reason (baby too big because of GD, high BP, and such) so I'm really hoping to go on my own this time! One way or another....

Fenugreek - used frequently to increase milk production in breastfeeding women, and to help uterus get back to normal size quickly after birth. It causes uterine contractions so it's not recommended for use until full term is reached or after baby is born. It's occasionally used to induce labor although from what I have read it's not used often. I think most MW's wait and use traditional medicines for that.

Evening Primrose Oil - starting at 35/36 weeks caplets can be taken at an increasing dose (up to 2500 mg/day), it softens and ripens the cervix to prepare your body for labor, many women will insert the gel caps as a suppository up by the cervix. Can cause some contractions and is not recommended from O until late pregnancy. It's high in prostaglandins (like semen) which is why it's supposed to help bring on labor. I won't use it as a suppository, I'd rather BD and get the same effect lol.

Raspberry leaf tea - helps strengthen uterus to prepare body for labor, won't bring on labor but it can help have an easier and faster labor. This can be taken throughout the 3rd trimester but listen to your body, I have a 3rd trimester tea that only contains it, it's not entirely raspberry leaf tea, and I found that it increases intensity of BH so I'm holding off for a few more weeks before I'll drink it again.

I am still researching the black cohosh but it looks like it does something similar to EPO and helps ripen cervix, more info is needed here though.

Then there's the old wives tales - sex, nipple stimulation, long walks, Chinese food, bumpy car ride, a Guinness (not sure how exactly this one is supposed to work lol).

Considering I was induced last time at 37.5 weeks (high BP) and I was already 1 cm and 80-90% effaced, it would seem my body was ready, (no pitocin just prostaglandins inserted by my cervix) and I had a huge baby @ 8lbs 4oz and 22 inches long, I'm hoping to go by 38 weeks this time. DH is a much bigger guy than my ex and was over 9lbs when he was born so I'm guessing DD2 will be a pretty big baby... lol she was already measuring bigger at my last u/s and my uterus is measuring 3 to 4 weeks ahead (and NO weight gain for me).

I would imagine that they would be keeping an eye on baby's size for you....? Considering you tend to have big babies. They may want to induce early with you. Will keep my fingers crossed!!

Those sound interesting! Would be nice to see how they work. With my first, my water broke at 37.5 weeks just hours after having sex. Not sure if thats what "caused" it, but sure seems like a weird coincidence. Smile Nothing worked with my second.

They don`t seem concerned about baby`s possible size or the fact that my bp spiked last time to 177/100. New city, new hospital, new doctors. I've given them my history and I ask a million questions each appointment so here's hoping when the time comes they step up to the plate. When I found out I was pg, I'd been temping and brought in my ovulation chart to my first appointment because my LMP edd was not possibly accurate (early Jan) where I O'd on CD 50+. The doctor wouldn't even look at it. However most of them have been good, it just depends on who is on during my appointments. I do however LOVE the nurse, she's fantastic!

Lol Crystal, I'm going to be storing all of that info for early Feb! I don't want to go early (I'm working up until the end of Jan), but as soon as my due date hits, I want this baby born!
I have a NST and U/S today, so hopefully they'll tell me how baby is measuring....DH was over 9lbs as well, and I'm really hoping babe doesn't take after him!!

Jo I can't imagine working that long! We are very lucky to be living in Canada Smile You do know that if for some reason the doc puts you off before then you can take up to 15 weeks sick leave in addition to your mat leave?

With DD1 I was put off work early due to High BP and then on bed rest at home when it continued to rise so I was done by 28 or 30 weeks I think. This time I'm a SAHM so I get to curl up and nap whenever I feel like it lol. DH is happy to come home to laundry and mess if I've felt the need to take it easy. First trimester I don't know how I would have ever managed to get to an outside job, I was just so exhausted!

I'm feeling a ton of pressure ! This guys seems to want to come out Smile

I had an appt today and measured at 32 weeks, 4 over where I actually am. My midwife told me last time over or under 2 is normal. My midwife was delivering a baby today, so the other woman in the practice did my check. She said that possibly she just didn't get a good measurement or it's just that he will be a big baby. He was measuring big at my 20wk u/s so no surprise there. She also said brothers are usually bigger than sisters. My daughter was 8lb 7oz so we are expecting this little guy to be a chunky monkey.

Jo, I'm planning on working right up until my due date or delivery, but I will be super happy if I make it to February 15th, which is 2 weeks before my due date. That's about when my boss asked me to stop working before. I have a different boss now and she seems to be okay with me working up to delivery if I want. I'm only working two days a week instead of full time so it's easier for her to have a back up. I'm a daycare assistant so it just depends. I don't want to go into labor at work, but I don't want to sit around waiting for two and half weeks. I'm planning on just going by how I'm feeling and see if anything starts happening in Feb.

I sure wished I lived in Canada specifically for the maternity leave. The maternity leave up there is awesome! I have friends from there... I have to work up until I deliver bc by law I can take up to 12 weeks unpaid, but can't afford that, so I will take the required 6 weeks post delivery. Again, unpaid. Sad Of course I could have short term disability, but I did not plan to become pregnant, and do not consider pregnancy a disability anyways. Thus is life I guess, but wish the U.S. would treat mothers of infants a bit better. Ok, vent over and I hope I did not offend anyone!

I won't get maternity pay this time, simply because I was laid off in March right when we moved, I get to keep my unemployment pay up until the end of February when it runs out so that's a nice bonus Smile We had planned on me being a SAHM regardless so we just have to adjust our spending to the new single income budget.

Pressure and pain tonight, volunteering at DD's school I had to stop and sit, BH that were intense to the point of painful. They went away but holy cr@p!

Yikes Crystal, I hope the BH's go away!!

I had the NST today, and U/S tec measured baby at 4lbs, 4oz......I have no idea if that's average or not, but I have my regular appt on Friday, so I'm sure I'll get told one way or another. I'm preparing myself for the whole 'you're going to have a big baby, we should induce you early' argument.....I know it's unlikely (my Dr and our hospital are minimalists when it comes to interventions), but I really don't want them to induce me early!.......Although that means going off of work sooner Smile

Is anyone else noticing now that we've hit the 3rd trimester, even simple tasks are taking SO MUCH more energy?? I swear, making a batch of christmas cookies the other day wiped me out so much DH had to pretty much escort me to the couch!

YESS!!!! Everything takes so much effort now, and I can always tell when i've really over done it because the BH starts and gets really uncomfortable. Last weekend was DD1 b'day party and my MIL's b'day. I made and decorated 60 cookies, 2 cakes (one chocolate and one pecan pie cheesecake) and a lasagna. On top of that I cleaned the entire house and did a ton of laundry. I almost couldn't move by the time I was done. Luckily I could relax all weekend with my IL's here, they helped out a lot with the party Biggrin

This week I am volunteering at the school and I HAVE GOT to finish Christmas shopping! I haven't done any Christmas baking so that's my plan this weekend, at least DH and DD will be home to help with that!

Jo according to pregnology at 32 weeks baby is nearly 4lbs, so your baby is a little bigger if that's the average but that doesn't seem excessively large. I hope you get to have her when you want to, I have to say I'd love to be induced early! I may have an athletic build (I'm so not skinny) but I'm naturally quite small at 5'2" and a short torso, so baby is already out of room, plus my uterus is measuring at about 33 weeks or so now (I'll find out for sure on Monday). I just want to eat a meal... lol

32 weeks baby should be around 4lb so your u/s sounds normal to me! Those u/s can be off slightly too in their estimations.

I have been moving in slow motion it seems lately. I can't seem to get anywhere quick and have definitely had to slow myself down the past couple of weeks! My energy level is next to none. I have my 32 week appt tomorrow. Will be talking to my OB about having a tubal and when that should occur, either while I am in the hospital or later as an out patient. We are definitely DONE having kids!!!

I am also on the petite size (5'4 130lb pre-preg) so baby is losing room here too!

Oh, and has anyone's morning sickness come back?? I have been nauseated the past few mornings for no good reason and have been nauseated on and off at odd times through-out the day. Last night I thought I would throw up I felt so sick to my stomach even though I hadn't over eaten or anything!

I have some occasional random morning of vomiting, not so much nausea just sudden vomiting first thing in the morning. It's weird. This morning I was letting the dogs out and very quickly I was throwing up over the side of the deck! ew!

Well my appt went well! BP and weight were good. Talked about my plan for a tubal ligation. Will do it while I am in the hospital after birth. That way they can use the same epidural and IV (save cost basically). I hate to have surgery less than 24 hours after my baby is born, but if it will save several hundred dollars I am OK with it I suppose!

My leg numbness is getting worse, within minutes of standing it's numb now. If I wear my belly support I've got 15-20 mins max.
They told me last appointment that if it gets worse I can go to physio for it if it were to get worse.

I just need to get through Christmas then I can relax for a while, DH is happy to take over cooking and cleaning, I started posting my to do lists for the day on the fridge and he immediately started working on checking things off. I love him to bits! I'm a very lucky gal Smile

I can totally sympathize! DD1 is ADD and without meds, she can't manage to get dressed or even carry on a conversation. It gets rough around here for an hour in the morning and again before bed when the meds are no longer in her system.

So I have been having moderately uncomfortable "tightening" every 2-4 minutes for the past several hours... after having sex? I imagine they are just BH, but their consistency and frequency are freaking me out a bit! I have tried a bath, drinking lots of water, resting, etc. They are not particularly painful, just uncomfortable. And they aren't getting worse. Anyone else experience this?

Did they go away?

My BH have never been regular like that, they tend to mimic my labor from DD1, no break between just constant tightening for up to 15 mins.

How are you feeling today? Did you go get checked out?

I finally went to bed, and they are gone this morning. I remember this happening with my first DS about 2 weeks before my water broke (at 37 week)... went into L&D bc of their regularity and they just called it false labor. So that's why I was hesitant to go in... it was late and we would have had to arrange for childcare for 2 kids, etc. Glad I didn't go. I will mention it to my OB next Thurs when I go, and no sex until then. Poor DH. lol

I'm glad they went away, hopefully they check you to make sure you are not dilated yet.

Men can be such babies about that too, DH had to go most of 1st trimester without because I had bleeding early on. He survived lol we're normally pretty 'active' so he really felt the loss though, I told him we'd make up for it at the end of the 3rd when we're trying to get baby out Wink

Crystal, that's awesome that your DH is attacking all the to-do lists!!
I have to say, DH has been so amazing. He's always been one to help out with things if I need it, but since he works 2 jobs, I try to make sure that when he's at home, he's getting time to relax or spend time with me. But lately (and especially now that I'm sick again), he's been taking on all the housework and getting me to just rest.

Nicole, glad your BH's stopped!! I get something similar to what Crystal was describing, this random tightening that seems to last for about 10 minutes, no come and go' pattern.

I had my 32 week checkup on Friday, and I have to say, as much as I like my Dr's office and love how proactive they are, I left there reallyh disappointed! I was in and out in less than 10 minutes. It was so fast, pee in a cup, get weighed, Dr measure my belly, tell me that as of 34 weeks I need to start going for weekly NST's, and then I'm out. I had almost no chance to discuss with her how I'm feeling, any questions or concerns, nothing. I've been getting sick over the past few days (first tell tale sign is my blood sugar spikes for no reason), and then all of a sudden I'm battling a bad cough. I mention this to my Dr, because 2 months ago I had a nasty bout of bronchitis, and I never felt like the chest infection was fully gone. It's a big concern for me, because I have asthma and I've had pnumonia before, and I REALLY don't want to develop it again! My Dr just tells me my chest sounds clear, and probably just picked up a bug, give it 10 days to work its way out of my system. Seriously? No other advice than just wait it out for 10 days? No suggestion on what I can do to speed it up, or make myself feel better, nothing?

So we finally did Xmas cards yesterday, now I just need to find all our addresses and send them!! I still can't believe how fast December has been flying by!

Jo that sucks that you left disappointed! Sometimes my appointments have been like that and I find it frustrating. In our hospital the OB working in the Obstetrical Clinic is also the one who is on call for L&D to deliver, we've waited hours past appointment time, had a 10 minute quick check and left feeling the same way. Are you on biweekly appointments now? Hopefully you feel better soon and get a more in depth check up next time!

....and this appointment was disappointing... had the most dismissive doc in the practice again today. She asks how I'm feeling, do I have any complaints/concerns then says well that's not going to get any better... or if that happens again come in and get checked out.

Today I brought up the heartburn which has worsened she said well have you been taking tums or anything? Uhhh YEAH, actually been taking zantac since the beginning on the recommendation of one of the other docs, it no longer helps. Then she says try to avoid foods that make it worse (umm water?? food in general???) and eat smaller meals (a single bit of food triggers it so I'm not sure how much less I can eat at once)... finally she gave me a prescription (I wasn't as snotty with her as I would have loved to be, I can play nice).

I had my whooping cough vaccine today too, she said I could get sick from it, but just take some Tylenol and I'll be fine, I told her no, I mean when I have the flu shot I get violently ill, excessive vomiting and high fever, oh well take some gravel if you need it it's safe to take when pregnant, you don't need to suffer.. Thanks I never thought to take stuff for my symptoms before :bonkself:

Baby seems to be doing fine and I finally got them to send my request for the fetal echo they were supposed to have sent weeks ago. DD1's cardiologist said it should have been done by 24 weeks... fingers crossed I get that soon!

Sorry you guys are having rough appts!

Got our car seat the other day, Chicco brand. We researched a lot, and really did not want to have to buy a new vehicle. So we found out what booster seats and which infant car seat would fit across the back seat of a sedan (we drive an infiniti and a cobalt, and my cobalt is VERY SMALL)... and IT FITS!!!! I am beyond happy to not buy a new car just bc we are having a third child. Eventually we will need to, but with me in school, its just a bad time to have that expense.

All we need now is a pack n play and we are set to have a baby. We want a pack n play for the baby to sleep in for the first couple of months before we bring out the crib. Right now, the nursery is my office so we are going to have to rearrange some stuff around to make a crib fit, so the longer we can hold off on that, the better!

Yay for being almost ready!

We still need a pack and play, a diaper genie, swing, high chair and a few little things. We're waiting now until after our shower before buying anything else though. If we got nothing more before she comes, we have everything we really NEED.

Nichole we need a bigger vehicle too, we have a Nissan Versa and a GMC Sonoma, (and a Kawasaki Ninja 650 - boys and their toys..). With #2 we will be a pretty full vehicle when we travel home monthly (so DD1 can have her access visits with her bio dad), 2 kids, 2 very large dogs, 2 adults and all our stuff we need to take with us... we're already near bursting as it is. Unfortunately we still have 2 payments so a new vehicle is out of the question for now for us too. Sad

funny how something so little can make you feel better...

This may sound a little vain but I've found that just the act of putting on my make-up and doing my hair makes me feel better these days. I also made a body scrub and picked up some really good moisturizer (with cocoa butter and vitamin E) that I use on a daily basis. As a SAHM there are many days where nobody sees me all day (other than my dogs) from 8 - 3:30 and I've gotten out of the habit of showering, dressing, make up and hair. And I was feeling really frumpy and blah. Maybe it's just the act of taking care of myself but getting back into those little tings has made a world of difference in my mood lately!

:lurk: Crystal - just the other day I was pondering that I don't think I've put on my makeup or done my hair since I started having morning sickness, which was about at week 6. I wonder what DH thinks. I used to straighten my hair fairly regularly and put on make up daily. I need to get my hair done again - it's way past time, but things keep coming up to where we don't have the money. I bet I'd feel better too, if I put the effort in, but all my effort goes into other things right now..lol

Jessica, I'm planning a 'splurge' day and getting my hair cut at my fave salon, I plan to dye it as well (for the first time since TTC!!) but might just do that at home to save the $$. Money gets tight here too but I have to find it soon so now's the time. My hair has been so dry this pregnancy it's insane so I need several inches cut off. I KNOW I won't manage once baby arrives lol

Oddly I remember taking better care of myself when DD1 was little than I do now that she's 9....

Crystal, I always find that helps so much!! If I've been sick or been having a few 'blah' days, it's amazing how much of a mood booster a shower, shave, and doing your hair & make up can do for you!
.....It's actually one of the things I'm a bit worried about for when the baby is here......I'm notorious for spending my weekends in my sweats - if we're not going out, I don't shower (I have long curly hair that takes forever to dry, and it's nice not running around with wet hair!), and so I have this feeling that for at least the first month or so I'll look like a creature from a horror film, only worse!

You might be surprised Jo, I know the first week or so DD1 was home it was a bit of a juggle to get organized but once I did, I managed ok. Maybe I didn't wear quite as much makeup but I perfected my '2 min face' lol

A suggestion - if it's at all possible, try to shower at night. It's much easier to have DH home so you can really have a relaxing shower and not worry about baby. I know not everyone can do that, when I was younger I had to wash my hair in the morning, every morning because of the cut I had. Once and a while (my ex wouldn't handle her for more than a few minutes so this was really a rare occasion) I even got a hot bath which made me feel so spoiled!
