    Default Insurance woes

Anyone else thinking they are going to have major out of pocket expenses for this LO? I'm about to meet our deductible for our insurance (I probably did after this last appointment I had on Tuesday) but now I'm thinking ahead to next year...most likely my LO will arrive by the end of January, and b/c it's the beginning of the new year, I will have to meet the deductible all over again. I guess I'm sort of worried as I've already got the medical bills piled up- almost 2,000.00 I already owe! That's just for lab work (in the beginning) and an impromptu ultrasound I had (b/c of bleeding early on) does that not seem ridiculous to anyone else? Our insurance is through Humana and so far I'm not impressed. Ugh.

We have to pay our co pays then 10 % of the birth. Not terrible. DH works for the government. He is an engineer that designs tanks and armored cars for the military. They only true out of pocket expense we will have is if we choose to have a doula

Sorry to hear. That just seems insane! DH was offered a job at US head office for Purina in Saint Louis (he works at the Canadian head office now) but he said no because US health insurance is just too confusing for us! In just reading posts on the internet, some US insurance companies will count pregnancy in the previous year so you don't have to pay the deductible twice though, so maybe check that out.

Our cost is 10% plus deductible for physician prenatal care and $250 admission plus 10% for hospital delivery and stay. I'm estimating our expenses between $400-700 for physician care, but not really sure about hospital cost. We were spoiled last time when DH's previous company's insurance covered everything (no extra cost for adding partners and dependents, no co-pays, etc). We paid hardly anything for our infertility treatments and medications, prenatal care and hospital stay for DS. But I still feel very fortunate to have insurance at all and our current coverage isn't too bad considering other alternatives out there.

Thanks for the tip! I need to call my insurance with some other questions so I'll ask about this too.

ETA: no rollover to following year on my deductible for pregnancy/maternity care; but I did find out they will cover a breast pump up to $300 so that's cool as I only had a medela manual pump last time & want to upgrade.

I have insurance through the state since im a state employee and it isn't that great. My office stuff isn't too bad, looks like the labs a covered which is good because I've had a progesterone level every week! Ultrasounds are usually covered, but my hospital cost is the stinger. I've got a $250 copay and then 20%.
When DD was premature with a 10 day NICU stay and we had a c/s, i ended up paying about $10,000 out of pocket between the two of us. Speaking of that, this month is actually pay my last payment. Most of it was 0% interest though, so that was helpful.

Another issue for me is that when i run out of leave and go to leave with out pay for maternity leave, i also lose the employer paid part of my benefits. So, for me and kids to stay coerced with health insurance, i have to write a check for around $1000/month every month until i go back to work. Wht DD i took 6 months off and had to pay that for 4 months. It really hurt, but i just wasnt ready to go back. Im not sure if I'll take 4 or 6 months this time.

I was just worrying about this today. We will end up paying a lot. We realized too late that we signed up for the worst plan when my dh started his new job in march and enrollment isn't until next march to begin in April. Too late now to switch. But we realized we have a 4500 family deductible, no individual. Then the plan covers 90%. But we have been in 5 months and are only at 487. My ob charges about 2600 total so that all goes toward deductible. And can't forget the 250/month premium we pay to even have this insurance. I am not sure what the hospital fees will be. But basically I will end up paying 4500 and then 10%. I had 3 of my babies on 100% coverage,no premium, deductible or copays and never a bill for anything including extensive genetic testing with my first. My 4th was on better than we have now with a 250 ind deductible and 20% after that. This current one sucks.

Yikes. I'm so sorry for some of you ladies! That's awful to pay that much.

Rachael - I wish we had something like yours! ALOT!

ASM I work at a public school with a great union. The insurance is why I stay when I'm not paid much! It's completely worth it. I will pay one $10 copay for the first appt. That's it. Everything else is covered in full. I know I'm very very lucky.

If I remember correctly, I think both our husbands used to work for the same company with the great insurance plan. Sigh...I miss that insurance, but DH was ready to move on.

Was he at MS? They no longer have 100% covered anymore though--times have changed for them too.
